I have heard of that problem
Most likely it could be fixed.I have a 1200 that needs to repaired... Actually I have opened my turntable up, because I took it in to an ASC.... They fell off the stands that were attached to the wall, so they got bent pretty bad. The only thing really wrong with one was that by the start/stop button there is a small board that connects to it and the pwr swith... that board connects to the main pc board. The the small board broke on my turntable... unfortunately they have declared it unrepaired, because Panasonic does not have a replacement part number for the board. And the small board piece that broke kind of shattered, so I am missing pieces.
I saw the problem that you mentioned before, but I saw it from a guy who was selling his damaged that way.
I don't know much about these (OR DO I HAVE ENOUGH EXPERIENCE WITH THEM) to give you a professional opinion. However, from my experience from trying to get both repaired (been trying for two months and still going), this is what I advise you:
1. It is not that hard to replace a part internally. I have opened both myself and put the whole thing back together.
2. The problem with your issue is that there could various reasons why your turntable is doing that. The hard part will be to diagnose the part that may be malfunctioning, as opposed to the replacement of the part.
3. You may want to take the technics to an ASC, so they can give you an estimate... pay for the estimate, it should not cost more than $35 bucks. Once you get the estimate, they will tell you part needs to be replaced.
4. Once you find out, tell them that you dont want it repaired, and take the turntable back. Then, buy the part and replace it yourself.
To conclude, you want to have a professional who is experienced and a certified tech to diagnose the machine, because he/she may know right off the bat what is wrong with it, depending if he has seen the problem before. Pay for the hard work, then you do the easy work and replace the part.
A couple of other things to expect/know:
Parts for these turntables are expensive.. You can take a look for yourself at 1200s.com, under parts listing.
Good luck, but in the event that it does not workout for you, let me know, and maybe we can workout a deal for you to sell me some parts.
