How does Swifts inhuman satire makes us define what is human?
In the document A Modest Proposal, Albert Fish suggests that he has found the way to alleviate poverty in society. Albert Fish proposes that infants should be breed for the purpose of feeding people. In his proposal he goes into the mathematical details of how eating infants would not only feed people, but also give money to those in need. His proposal was a simple satire not to be taken seriously. Although it is meant not to be taken seriously, his proposal does make us question about a lot of things. Is it right to eat infants, or any other human being for that matter? Would eating a person make someone an animal instead of a human being? Would the selling of our own flesh and blood make someone less human than others?
Before answering these questions, we must first define what is human. The definition found in the Oxford English Dictionary is a broad definition of human. It says “Belonging or relative to humans, relating to or characteristic of activities, relationships, etc., which are observable in mankind, as distinguished from (a) the lower animals; (b) machinery or the mechanical element.”.
