This'll be my last post for tonite...
Listening and reviewing:
1. Haha! I recognize that sample.."wah-woouu!"...tsk tsk! I thought at one point it would go well in some of my songs, but alas....you might want to consider takin' that outta there. It's a little too cheesy for the rest of the song.
2. I'm not enjoying the squeaky saws that much, but the breakdown at 2:00 is reallly cool. I'm a sucker for padded breaks, but it's getting a little long winded at almost 1 minute long with no changes/background fx/melodies. Might want to focus on that.
3. I think you would do well to lose the pounding kick if you're going for a dark track. For a song of the same type of mood, try downloading/getting your hands on "Nothing (93 Returning Mix)" by Holden and Thompson. Experiment with your drumkit and rhythms a bit. Add some Dr.Rex loops in there, if you have to - there's nothing wrong with cheating a bit as long as it's not noticeable (i.e. front and center beat.).
4. It's done.
So what did I think?
- Well, it's got potential. It's hard to listen to because of the main melody and the "pound-pound-pound-pound" of your kickline, but the break is quite well done.
- Go wild with the instruments. It's not like there's a shortage of hardware or anything. Some guys on this board have used ~25-30 different synths/drumsets, without effects! (my pc can't handle that..so I have to manipulate the ones I have....really draining and makes it hard to make a song)
- There is definitely a dark feeling to the song; sometimes the chord progression goes a little wacky to some flat notes but that's all part of the confusion, I guess.
- It seemed to be mastered well, but I'm listening on small speakers, seeing as it's 4:15am right now.
So what do I think?
I'm glad this tune isn't a lengthy beast - it would lose some of it's appeal if it were 8-10 minutes long. I suggest you polish the break a bit. It had a stray note somewhere that didn't seem to fit, and maybe some background stuff to accentuate the pads would be good. I'd recommend ditchin' the built-in sample too.
It's listenable, but with understanding.
Variation and subtleties make a song sound better almost all the time so get creative. A solid 5/10 for the effort and time, and for the pretty good sound quality.
Second listen: I like the "tearing" saws...those deep ones. The chirpy ones I'm still not a fan of, though. Still likin' the break though. Too long in my opinion without change though. Pads are fun, but some other crap in there would make it better I think. Add some polish, there's definitely a 7/10 here. I'm imagining some great beats after the break that I'd put in..go nuts! Good luck, thanks for sharing.
