got a lot of mp3's of sets recorded from the radio - a lot of them seem to be at 192.

Does anyone have their preference for if there is a noticeable difference in FM radio recordings, at 128/160/192 quality?

I'm considering converting about 20 Gigs worth of sets to a lower bitrate, in the hope that an FM source won't justify 192 quality, and i can save a few 100 MB of space at the same time.

For FM rips, I can not hear one bit of difference at 128. And I'm a pretty big audiophile.

You know how long it's gonna take to reconvert all those down to 128kbit, right? Hella long!

I'm so lazy. I'd rather buy a bigger hard drive. They're so cheap nowadays.

Nah, wouldn't take a real long time. Throw some in a queue overnight and just let them go while you sleep. In a few days you should get done... unless you have like <----- that many

Yeah A While my XP 2400 can work for a living for a change

I've got 2GB left on a 40 Gig drive...and I'm about to backup everything onto CD's - so 192 > 128 will make a sizeable chunk of difference to my backing-up'ness

i've done a trial on a marco v set, and personally i can't hear any noticeabe change in quality, but i can't really listen to it THAT loudly. so any second opinions about FM quality bitrate are welcome - thanks koolaide (y). i will probly end up converting the radio stuff to 128.

then its totally up to you. if you have a nice car system, take two recordings to it, and blast them. if you hear a difference and dont like it, then stick with 192. if you dont hear any difference, or it isnt enough for you to care, then convert. its as simple as that.

well if you cant tell any difference at the levels that you will be listening at (and louder), then what the point of keeping 192 if youre low on space? and btw, ive noticed that in some recordings i can distinctly tell the difference, while in others i cant notice anything different. so just convert the ones you want, and stop complaining ... or just buy another damn HD

storage is cheap. 128kbit MP3 can sound funky..

especially considering you will be recompressing existing Mp3s.. double quality loss.

if space is a worry, you should have used OGG VORBIS from the start :P

i definitely cannot test it louder than my normal listening levels. I batter my car speakers as it is

It's not so much the HD space and the finance. Partially it's that i could fit 7 on a CD rather than 6 (increasing my ICMCPD -- in car music choice per disc -- by roughly 15% ) ... and also the same thing which makes ppl delete old txt msgs on their phone (phones which have virtually unltd memory). Tis just memory space possibly needlessly going down the pan
