I agree that his monologues aren't (Leno is the king of mononlogue) usually Conans best area. He never had a career in stand-up, but his in-studio bits, antics, remotes, and interviews (hit and miss), make up for that.
Yet it doesn't matter how good a joke Kilborn tells, because he just can't tell a joke. And when I don't laugh at his monologue jokes he brings his nostalgic "news" segment followed by a banal interview. The only shining point is that occasionally he would bring on a guy from the street or someone who worked there like the sound guy who would be funnier than him. Also, his announcer is funnier than him. That's why they replaced him with the hilarious Jon Stewart on the Daily Show, and now they're getting rid of him in late night.
