Updating the software on a numark cd deck is simular to updating the bios of a pc w/ a flash rom. The reason why they have warnings is if the unlikely event that updating should fail (like the power goes off while flashing), it can leave the player unusable, just like what would happen to a pc's motherboard that had a failed flash.
Flash ROM is a form of Read Only Memory that can be cleared and erased by applying a electrical "flash" to the chip. Then using the same method, data can be written on that rom where it will stay permanetly unless you flash it again.
So when you flash, be sure to have the newest software, and also burn the cd at the SLOWEST SPEED POSSIABLE!!! Also, be sure not to do it during a bad rain storm b/c if the power goes out when flashing your screwed. Also to be safe don't touch the player in the middle of updating. And if you do all that everything should be fine. BTW... I've updated my firmware on my axis9, countless number of motherboards, a hacked firmware for my dvd burner, and a 9800pro to 9800xt and back again. I never had anything fail (but i did have customers that kill stuff but that's not my fault ), so take my advice and everything should be fine.
