This is truely sad

Why don't these women get a fucking job? I know of situations personally that are almost as severe except that one took off to mexico (after paying through the nose) and the other is living with his parents at 45 years old while making 50,000 a year. The Canadian divorce court system is highly sexist against men and there is no doubt about it.

quote:
He’s a modern day Thoreau, but rather than a serene life in the woods by Walden Pond, Al Low can hear the roar of highway traffic from his crudely constructed shack behind the Q.E.W. in Oakville.

And there’s little time to contemplate man’s place in society or the delicate relationship with nature. Low spends his spare time in a state of constant stress exasperated by crippling alimony payments, and now, the threat of being ousted from his home of seven years.

Forty-eight-year-old Low makes close to $40,000 a year, but with two ex wives and three children to support, he was forced to make a hasty pilgrimage to the woods behind the body shop he works for.

“I wasn't homeless before but I am now thanks to the town and the province,” he said with more than a tinge of bitterness.

Low has lived in the homemade shack for seven years. But a re-location looks to be imminent. The Ontario Ministry of Transportation owns the property, and they’ve given Low one month to vacate the area.

“After 7 years, I guess they're worried about the liability,” he quipped.

“I'm not bothering anybody,” he added defiantly. “You know, I figured that was how things worked. You did your part and people left you alone, but apparently not.”

And while friends describe Low as a solitary man, he’s not alone in his fight to stay put.

Both the Canadian Auto Workers and Family Justice Review Board have contacted him and promised to help.

Any man who ends up being homeless and does nothing about it for 7 years deserves what's coming for him. But yaa, the "justice" system is a joke still.

who are you to judge him?
The man is paying a little over $1,000 a month for child support. Ya, he probably could not pay his alimony and go off and live somewhere decent but you gotta respect him. Let him be.

Wow....I agree with you Jay

Divorce and support proceedings have been wildly balanced to favour the women for decades. I've seen it first hand. My father got hosed when he divorced my step-mother....her kids were adults and out of the house while I was still in middle school....yet he had to give HER money. He stayed afloat but it wiped out all his savings and he had to remortgage our home. THat meant no money for college for me...I ended up having to work 30+ hours a week on top of my courses.

Yes, fathers have responsibility to their kids but the aplication of the laws has gone way too far in many cases.

I've been to a divorce court before. The sight of the guys coming out of there is scary, they look like they've been sentenced to hell. One guy was pale-faced, sweating, looked like he was about to die. They will try to take everything you have, and everything you will ever have. And given Canadian law they will get it, and more.

Be careful who you marry!

Hahaha! Be afraid, be very afraid!

Or just get them to sign a pre-nup... It's your money, anyway.

a pre-nup doesn't prevent you from paying child support.
There are too many deadbeat dads out there. For every dad who you think gets punished by divorce court, there are 5 that get away paying nothing for their children.

My mum works in family court and it's stunning the stories she comes home with.

You gotta be a LITTLE more selective with who you respect This guy doesn't deserve any. If he makes $40,000 and pays $12,000 in child support, that leaves him with $28,000. He could easily rent a basement for $500/mo, which would only cost him $6,000/yr and still leave him with $22,000. Of that, he could easily save $10,000 and in those 7 years, he coulda had $70,000 saved up for a downpayment on a small franchise or something. But instead he's getting evicted from a shack by the highway NO respect!

That $40,000 we're talking about, is that before or after taxes?
If it's before taxes, then it's not THAT much money, especially when you got children to support.

Just a small correction, making $40000 does not mean you get to KEEP all $40000, there is a small thing called TAX too. Also, where is this $1200/month payment coming from, the article mention's nothing of his payment amount? His payments I'm sure are more then $1200/month for 3 children.

Just make sure you take your time choosing the woman you're gonna marry... otherwise, you're just gonna create yourself some problems later on. It's really simple as that. Or, just to keep things even simpler, don't marry in North America
