Arrow Bassducking Question...

For the techie's who know how to do this, I just want to make sure I have this right.

I have my bass and kick linked to an FX Channel and have looked at the DB on both, set both at the same db (making sure bass does not surpass the kick or visa versa and etc.).

How would I now set up a "bassduck"? Would I need to add a sidechain to this channel to "bassduck"? Are you supposed to use the side chain with the linked fx channel which gives this effect?

Or should it be done seperatly, like linking the bass to FX3 and kick to FX4 and then adding a sidechain to either. That's where I get confused. Sorry if I've confused you as well =p.

Also what is usually done with gate (sidechaging) as far as attacks and release's, hold's, lowcut's, thresholds, etc.

P.S. - I've compressed the channel with the bass and the kick has a compressor on it and the compressor is set with an Attack of 20.0 ms, a Release of 100 ms, the threshold set to the db of the bass / kick, and the Ration set ot what sounds right.

Sorry for so many questions.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks guys.

- Jaye

Maybe I`m missing something......but how can we help you if you don`t tell us what software you`re using.....

As for the settings.....use what sounds right....same settings on two different tracks will sound totally different.....let your ears be your guide.

Sorry. I'm sequencing w/ Fruity. I compressed with ultrafunk compressor, and will be sidechanging (once learned how to) with waves. Bass is triangle.

I'm not 100% sure what bassducking mean but what I'm pretty sure what you want to do is to isolate the bass from the kick so it doesn't mesh up together.

There are 2 thigns you can do:
1) EQ: listen to both the bass and the kick and try raising or lowering certain frequencies (no more than 3 dB). What you want to do is cut the frequencies that don't seem much to contribute to the presence of the bass or kick but seem to just sit there taking up space. For example, you might want to give the kick a bit more presence between 200-500 hz while giving the bass less presence in those frequencies but rather in 20hz-200hz and 500-1000 hz. Also, I find it is always helpful to give the bass a bit of a high end sizzle by boosting a tiny bit maybe around 5000hz-10000hz

2) Compression/dynamics: I don't know of a way to sidechain in fruity but there is a way you can emulate it. Take the kick and put it in fx1 and the base in fx2. Put a fruity peak controller in fx1 (make sure you unmute) and go to fx 2, right click on the main volume for that channel and click on link to controller. Find Peak controller (peak) fx1 and select it. Now go to the peak controller, and set the base to 12 oclock, and the knob beside it (forgot what it was labelled.. "vol" i think) and set it to anywhere from 9-11:30 oclock. What this does is, the volume of the bass is lowered whenever the kick is playing.
note: alternatively, you can add a compressor in fx 2 and link the threshold and ratio to different peak controllers in fx 1 to get a more realistic sidechaining effect.
Finally, make sure you get a good compression on the bass and kick individually so that it will sound tighter for a tighter sounding mix.

Hopefully that helps

Thanks for the quick response kewlness. Definitly of some help.

Tried it out and it seemed to do o.k.

Question, waves c1 has a sidechanger eq on it which seem's to work concidering. I tried it when I got home last night and it keeps all the bass in the low region keeping it not to clash w/ the bass. Sounds pretty good. Have you ever tried that before?

Thanks again.

The side channing feature of the waves C1 compresser (which is what i think your using) doesn't work in fruity for some reason..

I am not too sure on this, but I think the reason it doesn't work is because in fruity, there is no way to assign one fx channel as the input for the sidechaining and another fx channel as the output for the sidechaining as waves is in dxi.

Kewlness already touched on it, I'm a bit tired but it seems a wee bit incorrect. Here's what I do:

1) Assign your kick to FX1. (* I name it 'Kick 1')
2) Assign your bass to FX2. (* I name it 'Bass 1')
3) EQ and compress your kick/bass to whatever you want and add any other effects to those channels.
4) Add a Peak Controller to FX1 as the last effect, open it up and uncheck the Mute box.
5) Right click on the volume slider for FX2 (at the top) and then select "Link to Controller" and then select "Peak ctrl (Kick 1) - Peak' from the 'Internal Controller' section. Now type this in for the Mapping formula section "0.75-1.0*Input". You can play around with the 0.75 and 1.0 part. Put it's important that the Input is always subtracted so it "ducks". The 0.75 part means the bass output will be at 75% max. If you want the Input to decrease at a different rate than nomal, adjust the 1.0. Hell make it 0.75-sin(Input) if you want
6) ????
7) Profit

*Note: You can rename your FX channels but that will only really show up at the In/Out drop boxes at the bottom. Naming your FX channels isn't all that important, but its more helpful for organization if you're using the vocodor plugin or somethnig that requires redirecting In/Out to the FX channel.

Are you talking about a Sonitus FX Compressor?
