I use http://www.recovermyfiles.com/ but that's for recovering files you accidentally deleted and not for hardware failure. That's why you back up important data...

Hmmm sounds doesnt look to good if there is actually errors on your hard disk. If its just the system files(ie windows won't boot) then there is numerous programs such as erdcommander which can let you get to the contents of your hard drive without using windows.erdcommander

Windows won't boot with a defective device attached to the system so its a lost cause. sorry

I really like GetDataBack.

It should be avaliable for both NTFS and FAT partitions

http://www.runtime.org/

"Recover your files when the data is no longer accessible due to formatting, fdisk, virus attack, power or software failure. Get everything back even when the drive's partition table, boot record, Master File Table or root directory is lost or corrupt."

I wouldnt abandon all hope if i were you. Try googling your problem and see what you can come up it (Never lets me down). If all else fails and you really want your data back you could always have it looked at by a professional.
Well good luck with it anyway
