ortofon concordes

I recently bought some mk2s (used) that included a set of Ortofon Concorde DJ E cartridges. I have no idea how many hours have been played on them, so I'm wondering if I should replace the styli... I'm not super familiar with Ortofon cartridges (this is the first time I've used them) and looking around, I see that there are both elliptical (what I currently have) and spherical styli. Is there any benefit to one style or another? Can I use either style with these cartridges?

Also - if I replace the styli, the cartridges should essentially be as good as new right? That is to say - theres no real reason I should just get entirely new cartridges?

Lastly, how good are the Ortofon Concorde DJ E's? I've heard mixed things about the DJ series. I know the Ortofon Nightclubs are considered to be some of the best cartridges out there... Is it even worth replacing the styli on these, or would it be better to just get a new set of cartridges entirely?

Thanks for all the help, and sorry for the n00bish questions. Finally upgraded my old setup (numark tt1520s with stanton 505s) :P

One of the massive advantages of the Concordes is that you can interchange the styli. So if you swap your DJ E styli with Nightclub E styli - you'll have the equivalent of a Nightclub E cart (all the carts are identical, its just styli that differ). ie, all their styli fit on all their carts.

I'll leave it up to the equipment guys to answer your other question though..............

Very cool. So theres no reason to replace the cartridges themselves then?

Do you guys think getting the Nightclubs are worth it? They cost quite a bit more....

And does anyone have any input about elliptical vs. spherical styli?

Thanks again.

elliptical styli will give you better sound quality, but when DJing it is best to use spherical styli as it will not kill your records so much when back-cueing/scratching.

i think the general concensus is that the nightclub carts are pretty much the best all-round ortofon concorde cart. definitely just get the styli at first, there should be no damage to the carts themselves unless they are very old.

Awesome, thank you for the info. So sounds like spherical would be better for mixing at home, and elliptical would be best for playing out because of the sound quality. I'll pick up a set of Nightclub S styli then. Thanks again.

Actually i think the wear caused by elliptical styli is less. However most djs use sphericals because they track better and stay in the groove more often

elliptical styli sound better because they dig deeper into the groove. you work out the rest
