I recently started getting booked spinning at events in my city (approx. population 300 000).

I opened the main room of a 2 room rave (500 people) in May. I played the second room of a 2 room party a week ago (same attendance). I'm supposed to play the main room of a 2 room party with a good timeslot for events of similar size on Nov 20th and another 3 weeks later.

People enjoy seeing me play, and I have the time of my life doing so, but I'm concerned about having people think "I've seen him a bunch of times before...". It's generally the same crowd that will come out to a rave in a city of mine's size.

Can you play too many gigs? Should I soon say "No thanks, I'll play next time"?

no one will get tired of seeing you, as long as your not playing the same tunes over and over.

You will be fine, to me it sounds like you have a fantastic oportunity to build a following. As said above, don't keep playing the same tunes.
I think you will find that it's often good resident DJs who are actually the ones that make the night work and not the main name. The resident DJs are the ones people will see every week so you have to be good. Sounds like you have a similar situation here. Use it to get yourself known.
Besides, no one really remembers a no name DJ they have seen once, but if they see him a few times and he is good they might remember you.

I thought you were talking about professional dj's who spin close to every night. I know that in that case I'd probably get pretty burned out from it after awhile. But if you're only spinning every once in awhile... Dude, go for it!

to really buildup you need to play at least 2~3 times a week

take matt hardwick as a good example of this. he was playing every 2 weeks at gatecrasher for over 5 years. even when all the 'stars' came and did sets like PVD, tiesto, blah blah, most of the time he was out-shining them and often playing the best set of the night, even when warming up. now look at him!

the key is definitely variation. hardwick could play tech-house, funky house, prog house, prog trance, peak time trance, hard trance and he was also not bad at hard house. if you play a different set every week, no-one will get bored of seeing your name on the flyers

I have no knowledge of what is the best ratio to be spinning the weels, but I must agree with the above statements. If ppl enjoyed their night out in the club and they remember your name, they're gonna want to come back more often: to have a blast, and to see/hear you!

It does get boring overtime to hear the same type of tunes, but I guess a visit to the record shop will fix that problem in no time

Also...more gigs is more $$$, and more $$$ is a bigger record case. Which in the end gives you unlimited variation for every gig you play!

yes you can play too many gigs but chances are, you arent playing too many.

I had a very unique and wonderful experience a few nights ago and that was having dinner with Armin Van Buuren. I will repeat that, i had dinner with Armin Van Buuren. So we are chatting and i asked him if he gets to see many shows of other DJs. He kinda chuckeled and said "No, i do 4-5 shows a week myself, i never have time to see other DJs" And he seemed like he was disapointed to not be able to do that.

So if you are touring all over the world spinning 4-5 shows a week, yes you might be doing too many gigs. but playing in your own town, hell no, get as many gigs as you can!

*edit* sorry for bragging about dinner with AVB, but it was really cool and seemed sort of relevant to this thread.

Don't apologise for that man.
The man should be the worlds number one in my opinion. The guy is a machine when it comes to mixing. His eqing is amazing both in terms of output and transitions.
My friend met him and said he is a man of few words so you have been lucky to get conversation out of him so I'm told.

Hmmmm DJing 4 to 5 times a week... I could live with that.

heh he was full of words at the crasher xmas party, he's a totally sound guy, unlike some others from the superleague of dj's..

we got him wearing 6 hats! my mate promptly out-did him with 9 hats. it was a hat party in case you are wondering...
