New EU commision or not?

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/3953205.stm

well i donno if anyone here follow the european politics in american election times, but tomorrow the European parlieament will vote wheather or not to pass the new commission.

for you who have no clue as to why they would not pass it, one off the commissions members, Mr Buttiglione is anti gay (and somewhat anti women). so unlike in the US this is a problem

anyway, discuss, pass or not?

i think they should reject it, i dont want people who think gay is a sin in the european commission.

So what about the millions of Europeans in the union who think that it is a sin? Why don't they get their point of view represented? Back on the first of May, the EU picked up Poland as a member. Combine it with the members of the EU who are already strongly Catholic, and yes, you have millions of people who believe that homosexuality is a sin.

This is reminiscent of the EU's knee-jerk reaction to a democratically elected government in Austria that just happened to be far right wing. Why punish the Austrians for a legitimate viewpoint?

You liberals are so intolerant.

Well, i still believe in a EU that has nothing to do with religion and that treat everyone equal.

I'm liberal in the radical sense, and I happen to think that the commission should be accepted. Not because I sympathize with Buttiglione, but because I think the left-wingers is turning the thing into a circus, and that it is a waste of money to go through the selection procedure once more.
The guy stated from the beginning that his views on women and homosexuals are strictly religious, and that he wouldn't act on them politically. That's good enough for me - the outroar should wait until he breaks that promise IMO.

Well, I kinda agree with you. This whole thing falls in line with political correctness, and although that guy is a moron, if people voted for him, then I guess he should stay. The sad fact is that the people who voted for him are morons, but hey, democracy is only as good as the voters are.

I don't have a problem with some ultra-catholic commissioner, as long as he won't be in charge of the rights of people (he is going to be justice, human rights and freedom commissioner or something like that, I can't tell the exact name in English). So maybe changing the portfolios would be a solution.

And BTW, who chooses the nominees for commissioners?

Edit: I just read that Barroso decided to retire his nominees and he want more time before they get elected.

well, better do it twice and get a good commision than do it once and get a shite one

and it looks like italy wont damand a new commision leader, which will make the whole thing a lot easier cause then it is "just" for barosso to choose a replacer for buttiglione (possible some other changes?).

hmm, havent bush too said that the state and the church should be kept apart? i might be wrong tho, however the point is that if he has such basic values, i find it hard that he will not fallow them, would probably have been another thing if he was the enviornment commisionair or something tho...
