I enjoy and appreciate various styles of trance from sweeping, anthemic tracks to dirtier and heavier tracks that focus more on bass, so it's difficult to compare good examples of each variety with each other.
An opening to a set I find is best when there's a large build-up of strings and the mood is set, a good example being Nu-Nrg @ Orgasmatron Pt 2 when it opens with Trance Illusion.
The ending should be banging, with an emphasis on loud, pounding and stomping bass drums, a good example is perhaps Adagio for Strings (Ferry Corste Mix) or Dj Kim - Jetlag (Alphazone Mix). Both tracks have brilliant build-ups which then unleash.
My favourite all time ending to a set though comes from the master Oakenfold's Liverpool University set when he finishes with Phillipe Van Mullem - The Secret Folder after playing The Chase by Giorgio Moroder (Perfecto Mix).
Light and fluffy trance in my opinion has its place in a set, at the start usually, however when the set is filled with it it doesn't tend to be as enjoyable as the mix doesn't seem to progress much.
