Umm im kinda confused here...are u talking about it would be a pain to paste down your notes on the piano roll?..Because if you are...its not such a big pain.Just hit the record button and play the keys on your laptop and when your done hit stop. You'll see your recorded melody or whatever on the piano roll.I hope that was your question. But if u want a MIDI Keyboard..i say go with a M-Audio Oxygen 8.Its like 139.99 bucks.

Well I mean, when Im in piano roll, the only way to play the notes is using my mouse to click on the piano roll UI keyboard, and Im having problems doing complicated melodies using only the mouse...
But also can you actually assign a computer keys to correspond to notes? For example can I assign it so that my middle keys on my pc keyboard "asdfghjkl" correspond to c,d,e,f,g,a,b?

I'm just learning the program myself, and maybe you already know about this, but under the options menu, try the "Typing Keyboard to Piano." That way you can actually type using most of the letters on the keyboard (depending on what you are using) and get that to correspond to notes. If you combine that with the record function, you can just sit and press buttons on the keyboard until you get something sounding good. You stop recording, then go back through and fine tune the piano roll for what you like. That works well for me.
