Problems with making a smooth, clear, pulsing bassline

hey... i did a search.. but didn't really come up with anything i was looking for. my partner and i are working on a nice progressive track, and we're really liking how it soudns, except the bassline. we've been trying to make a warm, yet clear sounding bass like many of these new prog. trance tracks have ex. junkie xl, probspot, etc. no matter how we tweak the parameters, compress it, etc.... we can't seem to make it sound as full and sweet as all these pro tracks. i'm just wondering if anyone could give us any suggestions, helpful hints, or ideas. i'd appreciate any. thanks a bunch!

hai lee chen

p.s. we use Logic 5.5.1 and some vsts are atmosphere, absynth, fm7, rhino, pentagon, albino.

some of the bass presets on absynth are quite cutting. i havent really plummed the depths of rhino or fm7 cuz fm synthesis confuses the living daylights out of me. i tend to make alot of my basses in albino but albino doesnt make many sounds that tears through a mix. if you know what i mean. it tends to fairly non agressive in the bass department and tends to have a blurry kind of bass end. you might want to check out z3ta+ for basses cuz ive worked a few basslines in that and the patches i made, even some of the presets have a tight sub and a more distinct bottom end than say albino or vanguard. most of the time my basses end up occupying many of the same frequencies as my kick. i dont know about you but i like to make huuuuge kicks. this is my biggest problem cuz i end up have to make EQ cuts to one or other leaving one of them mute and the other one dominant at the bass end of the scale.

what i do know is to make a notch around 500hz on the bassline (in albino) so the thump of the kick at least comes through partially. most of the sub i retain for my basses making them really fill out the bottom end but the downside is, with the sub it tends to make the bass sound particularly blurry. you might want to consider making a bass patch filtered on high dB band pass instead of low pass with the cutoff right down and see how it goes. essentially move the bassline a little more into the midrange frequencies and have an underlying sub bassline filling it out underneath.

hey... i appreciate ur long response. what we ended up doing last night is sorta what u explained at the end. we made a more mid frequency tighter bassline, and added a lower more pulsing bass to fill underneath it and it we ended up making a great bass sound. now we just need to mix it correctly.... it seems to be taking up a lot of headroom...
