The meaning of "crime" is debatable.

my philosophy class got into a two week debate about this.
i don't have the breathe to start this again at the moment.

maybe later.

well my stand is the the punishment fits the crime, depending on the intent and the outcome of the actions.

Does punishment always need a crime? The innocent seem to suffer just as much as the guilty.

In such an ugly world of great moral polarities, it's easy to see why people believe in Karma.

No, crime doesn't need punishment. In fact, it generally seems to flourish most when punishment is lacking.

i believe the questions you're going to have to address in order to even come close to settling on an answer for that is 'Are humans good or evil by nature?'

you can't decide if crime needs punishment without first defining 'crime'. so, yes, we are, if we are to answer your question in any logical manner.

In a very simplistic way, crime is the action of doing something that goes beyond one's rights by disrespecting other people according to society. Let's suppose you steal a car you can't afford to buy. Regardless of the reasons that convinced you to do such thing, in a society in which the idea of private property exists, you're not allowing the car owner to use what's rightfully his/hers. In this case, you're disrespecting his/her right to own something that belongs to him. The same pattern can be used for rape, drug using and traffic faults.

If there was no punishment, society's laws and standards would be replaced by individual anarchy because of the variety of opinions you can find in any community.

well, depends the crime, but if you kill someone, if you are not punished your punishment will be to be obsessed by that for the rest of your life, your life will be upset...
I STRONGLY advise to everyone to read the novel by Dostoievski "crime & punishment" , you will be astounded!

In order to address the question does crime need punishment, you have to know what crime is. Crimes vary from society to society, however there are universal crimes that all societies agree on, such as murder and stealing, etc. Other crimes depend on culture, and what we have come to believe is morally wrong. Crime operates outside of society, and is seen as something that hurts society, as a whole. So it should be punished, as a deterrent, and the punishment should fit the crime, as you all have heard before, and the punishment should be a little more severe than the crime in order to prevent it from happening again.
