I'm in a reviewing sorta mood tonight! Lucky you guys.
Step-by-step on first listen:
1. It's very "Solid Globe"-ish at the start. Nice, new, and modern trance style that I'm fond of. Circa 2003 December was a great time for the genre, and this is very fitting. I like the lessened dependence of saws in this track.
2. There's a mellow feel to the song; sort of like it wants to be high energy but is going to stay with the flow of prog. that is so popular right now. Nothing bad about it at the 3:30 mark yet.
3. Not a fan of 7-8 minute epics, though. I've never liked them because they seem drawn out unneccessarily. Although the track is well done, it still seems long winded.
4. I like the fact that the bassline and kick are not intrusive. I absolutely hate trying to play those POUNDING songs at home because: they are unneccessarily loud; they are really obnoxious; they are everything that the populace hates about electronic/dance music.
5. I've sorta lost interest by the ending, maybe because of the first listen syndrome.
6. It's finished!
So my thoughts:
- I enjoy the song. It is easy to listen to.
- The style is very modern and sounds polished. The elements blend together quite nicely
- However, it is unclear to me as a listener if I should be partying to this tune or doing homework to it - it's pseudo-energy, and that detracts a bit.
- It sounds like a lot of time was spent on developing the song, and there's a tinge of skill-drift: i.e., the song gets better quality at the end, but the initial vision and heart sorta gets drowned out.
- It's a good song, but it doesn't match to the title? Or does it? Black diamonds...doesn't really suggest an atmosphere of sadness like the song had.
- The talent here is great - how much background does the artist have? What were the inspirations for the song?
And on second listen:
Quite a nice song. It's definitely got some potential for an ASoT-style presentation, but it's not a show-stopper.
The sounds are modern and very nice but they are same as all the other prog-stuff out there, and I guess from a perspective of trying to get radioplay, I suppose you have to "make what they like..."
It's a nice 7/10 for sure, though! Thanks for sharing, and good luck
