very true. the only real use for a beat counter is, as you say, to get a starting tempo (which really can be done by ear easily anyway) or in conjunction with beat effects, samplers and loops.
the fact of the matter is that a lot of people don't realise how good their own brain is at sound processing. our brains have their own, more reliable beat counters, as well as built in compressors/limiters. if only they made an FX unit for your brain!
