Educating the salesman on the Technics SL-DZ1200

I'm ready to upgrade my CDJ100s so I went to Guitar Center (a music equipment store) to demo the Pioneer CDJ800, 1000, Denon S3000 and Technics SLDZ1200. I was really liking the 1000's but the salesman said "You really should check out these Technics.. they are awesome and I've had people return the Pioneer 1000s for these." Instantly I thought of the video that is going around where the digital scratch on the Technics sound like crap when the pitch lock is on. I asked them if he heard about that issue and he said no. Up to this point I didn't know if it was 100% true or not. Sure I saw it on video but I've never heard it live.

I put in my CD and scratch on the Technics. He says "It's nice isn't it?" Then I hit the pitch lock and scratch. It sounded AWFUL! It didn't really scratch and it just sounded like a video game. The look on his face was priceless! It looked like someone told him his hampster died. I said, "I heard that the Technics is no good, this being the main reason." He's like "Hmm maybe it's just this deck."
"Nope it's on all of them. Okay back to the Pioneer's."

He didn't say anything to me about the Technics after hearing the distortion. All that said, I think I will go for the 800's... only thing I don't like is the .05 pitch control increments but I don't know if it's worth a few hundred more to get the 1000's with .02 increments.

I also demo'd the new Pioneer DVD deck. It is AWESOME the way you can manipulate video like a song. When you scratch on it, it's like the person on the video scratches with you! They only had one deck set up so I'm really curious how you can mix video clips with it. It's nothing short of revolutionary.

That's an awesome story. If I ever decide to buy cd decks it will probably end up being at guitar center and hopefully I'll get to do that if the salesman brings them up.

The company I work for uses the Edirol video mixer to mix videos. You can do some bad ass stuff with it. The only "problem" at the moment: Which genre of music typically has music videos?

Pop music (Rap, rock, etc).

Not so much a problem for me, since it's fun for me to mix that stuff, but not something a lot of people here enjoy.

0.05 increments is amazing when youve been using 0.1, you can do a 160 beat mix and only have to make a few corrections - and because of the smoothness of the joghweel you can make them withotu their being any noticable pitch change or "wowing"

ive recently upgraded one of my cdj100s to a cdj800 and im looking to get another asap

When you increase the pitch, the tones increase too. The master pitch turns the sound back to it's original tones. Allthough I can't really see the point of it during scratching...

i don't ever listen to the salesmen at GC and places like that. sometimes its nice to get another opinion but take it with a grain of salt. usually the people there aren't dj's and therefore cannot give you the advice you need. the advice you can get in these forums is much better than what you can get in those stores.

You guys do realized that salesman at Guitar Center do get a 5 percents each item they sold. It all make sense on why this sales man wanted you to buy expensive Technics.

I had my share of stupid ass salesman story. This took place in 2002.
I wanted to buy a new mixer. This sales employee came up to me and reconmanded me buying the Numark DM3001 for 200. Now he was a pushy salesman, he was very fast talker, and mean at some point. Now here is the catch of the story. I asked him how much of discount can I get with the DM3001. He said, "I can get it down by 180 USD." I was cool with it. At the final moment, he caculated the final price. It was 208 USD. Now I live in Maryland, the state tax is 0.05 percent. The final price was suppost to be 195.3. This cocksucker earn a extra 13 dollars on top of his 5 percents share.

Fuck you salesman!!
