is it a tradition to give presents at a surprise engagement party?

Okay, so.... this guy is gonna propose to his girlfriend here in canada, at the "what she thinks is gonna be the US thanksgiving dinner".

The thing is, that everyone knows he's gonna propose except for obviously the girlfriend...and my question is

is it a tradition to bring gifts for the couple? and what sorts of presents would you give in a situation like that.. especially since its meant to be a surprise.

thanks.

Its a difficult one as you can't exactly walk in with a present as it will ruin the suprise.

Has he proposed yet?

I really like joint presents in situations like this, where you split the cost with 2 or 3 more people, so you can something decent like a small holiday away or something, or a hotel for the weekend or something romantic, and it doesn't cost too much...

well the thing is that they already know theyre getting married, but he hasnt officially proposed so he's gonna do it in 2 weeks. she has no idea.

it is a joint effort, as all the friends wanna get something for them, but had no clue what or if its appropriate. no material thing seems right, especially since its gonna be a surprise.

the hotel/getaway idea is a good one, but its tough with them, as he's from Vancouver and she's from L.A. ... but thats definitley something to work with...

thank you!

I know gift vouchers are really unromantic, although once I got a gift certificate at a travel shop for a couple I had no idea what to buy for then, and they took this awesome weekend away and always thank me for it.

People often have the desire but this forces them to get away. I personally think that memories are more valuable than material possessions.

yeah thats a really good point, and i agree completely. memories are better

see, i personally think that gifts would be more appropriate for the wedding.. not engagement... cuz they'll already be super overwhelmed with joy and nervousness... dont need more than that.. it'll be like emotion-overload

but, im just trying to get ideas just in case im wrong

Your company is the best gift in my opinion.

Don't make too big a deal about presents, even a nice bottle of wine can be well recieved.
