Time To Unite

It's time for those in the United States to just put (D) and (R) behind us. I personally wanted Kerry to win, but he didn't. For those saying they want to move out of America... by all means do so. Come next election, there will be a new president, just try to change things you dislike. Time to reunite, and fight what comes ahead. Enough with the United States Are Morons threads, get past it.

Besides, look at the bright side, we had a lot more voters this year. I had a bunch of friends work the polling centers this year, and they all had hundreds of new registered voters in their sections of the city.

No, the fight is just beginning. Democratic voters can't just acquiesce to the Republican agenda in the name of "unity", they have to get out there and make sure that they're a thorn in the GOP's side from day one. Whenever Bush tries to push a radical, conservative agenda, get out there and protest. Join the ACLU (God knows they're more important now than they ever have been) and other organisations interested in promoting civil liberties and more sain social agendas. They may have won the election, they may hold a clear majority in the senate and they may well have a couple more of their judges on the SCOTUS bench over the next four years, but for Christ's sake don't make it easy for them. If they don't want a divided nation then they won't push divisive policies. If they do push divisive policies then it's up to you to get out there and stop them.

Remember, less than 20% of the United States voted for Bush. It's your job to get out and there and help protect the other 80% from the backward, bigotted, hate-filled agenda that the Republicans will doubtless try to push through over the next four years. The future of your nation (and the planet) is depending on your actions - on your unwillingness to concede to the radical conservatives - over the next 4 years.

this sounds like a speech a political candidate would make.

authority must be questined and contested. otherwise you get Iraq, Cuba, N. Korea or palestine.

It definitely wont be easy for the Republicans to do everything they want to do... but then again, they do hold the majority vote.

Exactly! You seem to understand the value of dissent and critical thinking, so how come you don't incorporate that maxim into your own political philosophy more vigorously (specifically your views on Bush and the Republicans)?

That's my point. It will be easy for the Republicans to push through their agenda if the Democrats just give up and - for the sake of national "unity" - acquiesce under a conservative government. Things don't get changed by conforming, they get changed by opposing. And that's what the Democrats need to continue to do for the next four years - they may be in the slight minority, but 54 million people is one hell of a minority if it's united and vocal in it's opposition to governmental policy...

If there's any partial comfort, keep in mind that 60 votes are needed in the Senate for anything to really get passed. Don't think for a second that will happen. The moderate S. Democrats whom were often voting on the Conservative issues have been replaced by S. ultra Conservatives. The Senate is now more divided than ever. There's only a few Moderates on any side remaining, and they are likely getting pushed right off the playing field. If anything a gridlock in the Senate will be in place now more than ever. It will remain that way unless the GOP somehow finds a way to obtain 5 more seats in the next 2 elections.

Ain't gonna happen. And what's more, I think it's a safe bet to say that those Northern GOP Senators will likely get replaced by liberal Democrats in the years to come (spare S. Dakota). I think the GOP Senators will soon find that they will either be forced to compromise on those big devisive issues, or they will simply get nothing accomplished. And don't count on the Democratic Senators to merely lay down either. Working together on issues does not entail compromising your stance on issues, nor does it entail compromising reality.
