I read a interesting article in the latest URB (a U.S music-culture mag for you Euro's). Moby, and several others comment on how played out and tired the dance club music scene is here in America. Having recently begun listening to European Dj's I'm tending to agree. What the kiddy clubs and radio streams are playing is commercialized music that has no place in the genre of "trance" (aka kraftwerks anyone?).

The one Dj who may yet continue to bring a fresh sound to the states I believe is Christopher Lawrence. Heard enough of the stuff he makes to put him up there with Tiesto and PvD (in my mind anyways).

Wondering if anyone has read or feels the same way?

I don't see how you are confused, that made complete sense. He said that dance music here in America is commercial, even what many consider trance. And then he asks what anyone who has read or heard of the article thinks. It really isn't that difficult...peace.

I think the present incarnation of it will.. just like anything which gets extremely commercial .. .it'll get tired and die out ... look what happened to disco... it started out as funk which kicked ass.. then it got popularised... for several years it was big .. then the public got tired and moved on to something else.. don't get me wrong I like uplifting melodic stuff .. but I think that what will continue to exists once this phenomena happens (what happened to disco) .. will be GOA/Psy/Acid trance cuz It never got big and I don't really see how it could... it's not marketable enough... the melodies aren't catchy enough to play on MTV or something......

I'll personally always have a special place in my heart for trance but .. to be honest the collapse of the globalisation of trance won't break my heart... It broke my heart to see it bastardised and beaten into the present state it's in right now...

Exclamation

commercial music sux!!!!

a more recent example of how commercialization (i think i misspelled smth here, it looks too weird!!!) destoyes music is gabber...

gabber got REALLY commercial, everything started to sound the same, the atmosphere within the scene got bad, and the music died...

now, i see it come back a lill, but not as large as then, and it sure will never be again...

but i dont want this to happen to trance, so i say: do ANYTHING to avoid the commercialization of trance, cuz if u dont, ur killing it urself!!!
if u luv trance, dont buy commercial cds n stuff

so i totally agree with Synder, but since im repeating him, that was obvious already

and Moby saying the scene is dieing, he is one of the ppl responsible for that, like Jean is in Holland

Unhappy im gonna get hell for this one.....

Yeah fred I think you are right. 'Dance' music dying? I guess every type of music ever made is gone then - people can dance to anything. heheh. Things always change, but they are usually related to the past in some way. The way some of you peeps talk about trance is the way I have felt about Alternative, or yes even Hip Hop at previous junctures of my life. Am I currently addicted to some types of electronic music? Yep. Will it always be this way? Maybe, but probably not. Rather than worry about it too much now, I just live it up. And for those of you who say that country or rap sucks, just think of everyone that says the same thing about 'techno shit'. Yes, there is a lot of bad harcore rap out there, but then again some really great music has come out of the gangsta rap movement too. I won't try to defend country since it seems so universally hated, but that doesn't mean it as an entire genre is all terrible music. Many people rave about the GOA movement in trance, basically the beginnings or the genre. Do the same with every type of music you 'hate' and you will probably find something that you might, god forbid, actually like! I am not coming down on anyone, just using djfreds comments for support. What I am saying is that you should repsect every type of music as it means something to somebody somewhere, but that doesn't mean you have to like a genre in it's entirety or at all. >>
Find what you love - don't worry about everyone else.

Here, if you like hip hop and trance try -
Talib Kweli and DJ HiTek - Too Late f. Res
It's absolutely euphoric and not all 'bling bling'.

peace.

Dance music in America is dead??? That's messed cuz I think its really developing (not that there hasn't been developments already) I think there's a lot more underground than you're aware of.. next time buy XLR8R instead (not that it's underground, but I respect it more than urb)

I can't believe you'd hear that from urb tho, what are they going out of business??

latez...

Biznology makes perfect sense btw..

re: Confusion

Seems a little confusion in response to the post, URB did not say dance (aka electronica music in general) was dying. They posted a letter on how one of the beggining founders who popularized music (Moby...at least in America) is saying the scene is tired in America. I mistook the audience of this site... forgetting most of you are in Europe somewhere over the rainbow.

Moby has every right to say what he choses, seeing as how hes probably sold more CD's in America then any other "Electronic" artist. Although I won't disagree with anyone when they say hes a sellout (all his music plays on commericals.... very much the comercialized music. Moby went on to say how the club dj's all play the music they hope is cool so they dont alienate theyre audiences. He's just trying to say.... its time to experiment or move on or something

I just thought this was an interesting letter... when i get back home ill post it if you want.
