even when there is no audio source hooked into the mic jack the levels are almost yellow

Try re installing the soundcard drivers and if that doesnt work if you know much about computers open it up n have a look at the wiring.

Theres no wiring for the sound card...plugs into a pci slot & maybe has a 3 pin connector for some added power

make sure the pre-amp is turned off for the mic input on the laptop
there should be a checkbox in advanced settings that says "+20 db boost" or something like that, make sure it's unchecked

yeah, mic inputs are not the way. On some laptops there's a "line" input instead of a mic. Just use line instead of mic.

Definitly, if you can mute the mic and use a line it will be better quality too

This is true, but what about people with laptops that only have a mic input?, I used to use it and I got the levels to stay nice and low, but it will record in mono, I only did it afew times, I'm planning on buying a PC Card Soundcard like the Echo Indigo IO card, got a line in and line out and I think its 24bit/96khz, not to shabby.

if the laptop doesn't have a line in.. you need something like this:

http://us.creative.com/products/pro...207&product=154

There are other things you can get, but that is prob. the cheapest and something that will suite your needs for mixing and making demos and what not.

I hate to ask this again, but i didnt remember seeing anything about if you went into windows and check the mic input problem. Also on soundforge, you have to adjust the input levels in there as well.

just re confirming
