IM STUCK..plz help (trance)

im playing next week in a warehouse party dat my friend and i throw for the luv of music..we are all bedroom DJs.
I'm playing uplifting trance at peak time, songs like 8wonder,slience(21century remix), energy driver etc....but i cant stand all the break downs in uplifting trance...i think it kills the mood sometimes with all the breakdowns..wut should i do? i listen to many live sets, they overlap it with beats of next song but im not dat good at all cause it involves alot of accuaracy also the songs has to match..any tips? appreciated! My friend told me they luv it when it breaksdown(if they are rolling) u think?

you have a few options.

play tunes with shorter breakdowns.
mix a tune with a really long intro right after your drop the tune with the loong breakdown. then when the breakdown drops, bring in the other tune with all the lows cut and then filter everything in.
mix out of the tune before the break hits - kinda anticlimactic, but it gets you out.

there are (or at least there were back when i played trance) plenty of tracks with only short breakdowns. if you get stuck play a bit of melodic techno stuff, or some tech trance.

just give it a little variety

dude, i feel the same way too ... most of the trance tracks nowadays seem to have so many breakdowns..... its sick and tiring to just wait. on the other hand ... mixing before the breakdown, kills the best part of the track .. coz usually breaks are around the 2min mark of the track.but whats the point... you see... when you bring in a incoming track... that will take around 1:30 min ... at least for a smooth transition.

lets take this scenario

your live track is now in a buildup ..... then it goes into a climax
you incoming track is in the intro part ... just bass and snare then it plays the body of the tune around the one 1 mark, only to go into a breakdown at the 3min mark. so that leaves me only that portion to mix in to ... but if i were to keep doing that then the entire mix will be full of breakdowns after every incoming track.

now i have seen this not only from my mixing, but also a lot of trance djs in singapore... Dj Yukun, Jask .. now they are not big.. thanks to the cheesy and small trance group in singapore. I have even seen djs like AVB in singapore, his set a couple of months back was full of heapless breakdowns... he is spinning here tomorrow. so it will be interesting to see.

but anyway... guys ... i will dare to go ahead and tell you this ... 90% of the trance tracks being released nowadays all have freaking breakdowns.... although it is good... but WTF .. do we need it all the time? I know its the artist way of appreciating and its his style... but its the mixing thats makes it so hard.

but the weird thing is that ... djs like tiesto, paul van dyk ... now they are good. someone once told me in this forum that they have special edits for the tracks they play during their set, so you never hear the breakdowns. i would love to do that .. but i have no knowledge in editing and using soundforge with no experience makes it ugly when i chop it up. any pointers?

1. Go to the record store with an open mind
2. Pull 15-20 records off each wall (house, techno, progressive, etc)
3. Find something you like, if you don't, ask the salesperson to help you find something that is your style

Always broaden your horizons! Trance is not the end all and be all of EDM!

make a track of just drum beats and burn it to cd. play that cd during the break downs. make a few of them w/ different style kicks to make it sound different. that would make the breakdowns sound kinda like the ones in Capetown - Pitstop.

Our you could always just go through yer tracks and find the ones w/ long, dull intros and couple those w/ the breakdowns and mix those in before the break comes.

if you play with cd's then use the power of re-editing to cut out breakdowns

you will need a decent wave editor such as cool edit pro 2 or soundforge. you then need to chop and paste bits as you see fit. you will need to practise cutting at the right points, and learn how to 'read' a wave. this isn't in the slightest bit hard, you should be able to work it out for yourself in 5 minutes.

if you want to re-edit a breakdown, just try pasting some eq'd beats from earlier in the track over the top. use an eq like you would on your mixer if you were doing it live

one last little tip, if you are chopping a beat and replacing it with another section, its always a very good idea to fade in the first 2ms and fade out the last 2ms. these fades are inaudible, and will cut out any click you might get from chopping the beat at a peak. you will notice a lin through the middle of the wave, if you try and chop it when the wave crosses that line you will get a good cut. if you chop it when the wave is far away from this line, you will get a click.

to see what i mean you will have to zoom in A LOT!!

hope this helps in some small way

i like some of the breakdowns really, but if its like 2-3 minutes ill throw one of my really long intro'ed Breakbeat songs over the breakdown to give it that oomph that you might be looking for...

Well there are several ways you can deal with it:
1) You can bring it into soundforge and directly edit out the break then burn it to CD.
2) If you have a CD deck you can splice right past a section of a song. Check out this video for an example.
3) Enjoy the break down for what it is! They add a lot of feeling for the song, and are almost always followed up by the best part of the song.
That's just my opinion.
