Well one thing you learn the hard way about buying records is never, ever, buy anything you haven't heard. So you want to listen to lots of livesets, trance compilations, radio and occasionally music TV. Try to listen to samples on websites and things like that. If you hear something you like, find it on single and buy it.
A lot of online record stores let you listen to samples, then buy the single, which is really helpful, as you don't have to trawl round shops looking for singles, and you know what the track sounds like. If you like a tune by a producer, try and find the artist album the tune is from, because there's a good bet you'll like a lot of the other tracks on the album.
