Why Martin IS NOT doing a good job
By now you’ve heard about the nearly $9 billion surplus the Liberals recently announced for the end of the fiscal year. But when you look at the results of where all your hard earned money goes, you have to wonder how they ever managed to save quite that much.
Now we have a hint. Auditor General Sheila Fraser has released her annual report on federal government waste, and has discovered the Grits on Parliament Hill are simply taking too much out of your paycheque for Employment Insurance.
Fraser’s review finds the bucks the feds are raking in far exceed what it costs to run the program. She believes there should only be about $15 billion in the fund. Instead, there’s $46 billion in there, and it’s growing.
“For the last five years, we have drawn Parliament's attention to this issue,” she complains. “The government has yet to address the concerns about the accumulated surplus. In our view, the government has not observed the intent of the Employment Insurance Act.”
Fraser’s watchful eye has also landed on Canada’s drug plans. She warns the government is spending “tens of millions of dollars” more than is necessary on drug benefits.
She complains there are obvious savings that could be easily found, like buying generic items instead of brand names. And she notes she’s also talked about this issue before with the biggest spender of all, but that nothing’s been done.
“This is the third time we have raised this with Health Canada," Fraser laments. "I am disappointed that these issues have not been resolved."
