access virus b power supply?

i just got my virus through the mail purchased from another UK seller. im a bit excited about playing with it but something caught my eye - on the virus itself it asks for 12V DC at 500mA. the power supply that came with it is fairly huge and its got netzgerat written on it. actually, all the writing on it appears to be german. it says:

eingang: 230V ~ 50Hz 27.4W
ausgang: 12V, 1200mA, 14.4VA

i cannot speak german but i assume eingang means input and ausgang means output. the output voltage from the power supply is 12V/1200mA but the unit asks for 12V/500mA. is this therefore the right adaptor for my virus? i ask because im worried that i might fry the unit. anyone else own a virus b from the uk and has the output voltage on the adaptor to hand? thanks in advance.

I don't own a virus myself, but I would assume that the voltage/current numbers written on the unit is the minimum operational values, since the current can vary depending on the socket etc. I think you'll be fine. But if someone could actually confirm that this is actually the specs on the virus power adapter - that would be best!

Cheers - and congrats on the synth! *jealous*

im itching to plug it in. ITCHING. its sitting on my bed. if it had eyes, it would be staring at me, welling up, BEGGING me to twist its rotaries. but...before this post gets any weirder ill return to reality and just remind myself that if i fried this box, i can kiss good bye to £390 of my student loan. ouch.

Well, you can obviously try to plug it in and see if any smoke comes out. j/k

Actually, the output of your power adapter should not fry your virus - as Virus will draw only what it needs. The difference between 500mA and 1200mA is marginal. I have an iRiver mp3 player that requires 1400mA but adapter is supplying only 1100mA and it works. Same thing with my Novation Drum Station - it needs 900mA but adapter is only supplying 600mA - it works.

Of course, you can always email virus support for help or try calling them.

Good luck!

DO IT! DO IT!')

I really wouldn't worry about it -

I owned a Virus B in the past and I remember the power supply being a large box like you described.. and I remember that it didn't say Access on it

Access is a German company so it's no suprise that you managed to get one intended for German usage in the UK..

And I highly doubt that the seller would of supplied you with a wrong power supply...

If i had bought it myself I wouldn't of even bothered to check the power supply

ok, ive got it powered up. the OS is old and ive tried updating it. this is really confusing. the manual isnt exactly helpful. i play the midi file from the OSupdate zip file and my soundcard is sending midi data out into the input of the virus, but the virus doesnt acknowledge it. doesnt even count up the received blocks which im supposed to get. im really confused. tried searching other forums but it didnt turn anything up.

I got a virus c, comes with a huge power supply, when i got it first i thought "Wow this isn't the power supply for virus", But It is. So i guess access makes em all large. And why would a seller sell you a diefferent power supply than the one with the unit. Anyways if he was sellling you something alse he should at list mention that the unit dosn't have the original power suply....

because the last item i bought from ebay was an alesis m-eq 230 rackmounted graphic equaliser which came with the most suspect power supply ive ever seen. he had about 10 for sale. i didnt notice at the time - just thought the alesis sticker had been taken off at some point. 2 hours of continuous operation later and the eq suddenly switched off and i smelled burning. i tried to unplug the eq and got burnt because the power supply was *unbelievably* hot. the seller was kind enough to replace the unit completely but the replacement unit, this time with a legit alesis power supply also got stupidly hot. for a few weeks i only ever operated it for an hour at a time. it seems fine now though, although i still dont run it for really long periods.

so now im paranoid about dodgy looking power supplies. and the one that came with the virus looks as dodgy as they come. its like a plastic brick with german writing on it. i was too impatient though and had a play before tech support could answer. heh. it works fine (yep im paranoid).

now i have other problems though. this machine is a complex little bastard. easily the most complex synth ive got now. i spent the last hour trying to update the OS. im stumped. i cant even get it to receive sysex midi even though my soundcard is sending midi to the virus. im baffled. but ill tackle it again tommorow and follow the manual through from the beginning.

the manual is HUGE. and its written in a way which is sometimes really confusing. even if you already know the basics of subtractive synthesis. its got me stumped in places.
