so i blew my christmas money early this year and my new toy really brings out the faults in my sony in ear heaphones. apart from the fact that sub frequency range is non existant on them. i cant afford a pair of proper monitors so i was looking into monitor headphones. im really quite comfortable with in ear headphones as opposed to those large diaphragm jobbies which engulf your entire head. my budget is pretty low so its less than £50 if possible. i saw sony mdr v500s on ebay for about 40 quid and was tempted if not for the £8 delivery fee inside the uk. thats a bit crazy. looked around a bit more and saw some shure in ear monitor headphones for around £60 and i checked the frequency response and impedence and it was looking good. but i found when i was looking around how wildly different these can be between headphones and even studio monitors. sony mdr v700 quotes a frequency response of 5hz to 30,000hz. that cant be right? the more expensive sony models quote a frequency response of 20 to 20,000 hz. especially considering that these headphones have a greater freq range than some top of the line near field studio monitors. i have suddenly become very confused. are in ear monitor heaphones comparable to large diaphragm monitor headphones for the purposes of producing music? are near field studio monitors preferable to headphones? or is this purely an issue of comfort (and maybe neighbors sensitive to loud noises, looping over constantly)?

I use the Audio Technica ATH-M40!
They are the superb!
I couldnt expect any thing better...
But ofcourse regullar moniters are better for the sake of mixing...
Any ways, my advice is to try the headphones and deside what is best for you!

Currently these headphones are winning rave reviews:
I just ordered the Shure E5c in-ear monitors and am eager to listen to them! I'll post a review comparing them against the Sony 7506 - a common monitor - and the AKG 271S.

WOWHOA! those audio technicas are *expensive*
5 to 40,000hz frequency response?! that cant be right? how come some headphones seem to have insane frequency responses that studio monitors dont even come close to? i dont get it.
yea i had my eyes on those shure in ear headphones but i can no way afford the e5c. maybe the e2c. i hear its fairly good for the price as well since i already monitor on sony fontpoia in ear headphones (heheh. its not really monitoring - its guessing whether it'll sound better or worse in my car.)

I have a pair too, ATH-M40fs's - great value at around £50, nice flat response.

its in my first post. less than 50 quid if possible. so in USD i think thats less than $80.
i looked for those audio technica headphones from uk retailers. nobody seems to sell them. even the cheaper ATH-A500. britain always seems to be the last to get stuff.
EDIT: ahhhh available from japan only the people that bought audio technica headphones...did you have to pay import duty? was international shipping expensive on cans?
