anyone ever used the Technics SL-DZ1200 Digital CD Turntables... they seem pretty cool... alot of features that would benefit mixing electronic music.

for those that haven't seen them

I own a pair. I really like them. Nem will tell you they suck. They do suck if you're going to use them to scratch on though, I will say that. But as far as feel goes and for mixing, I prefer them over the CDJs and WAY over anything else. I like the vinyl feel to them and the capabilities are very nice.

You really can't go wrong with them, but when it does come down to it, make sure to try out the CDJs as well -- its a personal preference thing if you ask me.

I have used them at work before.
I liked them a lot- much preferred them to cdj 1000s which i hate with a passion.

Master pitch/master tempo functions are shit on anything, and there is a whole host of problems with the use of it and consequences to the sound as a result, which i wont go into here.
I generally never use it anyway- so this 'scratch sounds shit with master pitch enabled' gubbins i keep hearing doesnt make the slightest bit of difference to me either way.

I will buy one at some point to be honest- just a question of personal taste.

it seems to have some very cool features but another concern of mine because i am new to djing in general is that obviously a music file or a cd will last forever (as the cd can be copied if the other should get scratched etc), but how long will vinyl last and how much does scratching shorten the life of the vinyl?

that is why i am looking into using cds... but i keep hearing and seeing vinyl as the standard for the "true" dj... no?

like they said...

thats where the CD vs Vinyl war comes in

its really all personal preference, some do only CDs some do only vinyl alot do both, its really all up to you

a dj plays music and music comes in different shapes and sizes so whichever you feel works best for you

there is no one way to be a true DJ, a few years back all you had were cassette tapes and records so thats what an oldschool DJ used

today you have rising DJs who use laptops, CDs, vinyl, keyboards, drum machines, cassettes, effects units.... just about anything

recently i went to a big show in downtown dallas Tx called Meltdown where i saw Future Prophecies - one Drum&Bass DJ and one other guy who played some electric accordian thing and a saxaphone both wired through his laptop... the accordian thing played some really really low freqs which sounded absolutely wicked, had the crowd by the balls, never seen that many people go nuts

(check out Teebee Vs Future Prophecies - Dimensional Entity , all of the deep bass parts between the drums are played on that accordian thing - badass on bass heavy speakers)

anyways - how you dj is up to you as long as you enjoy it
