Im doing this for you here, but from now on, please keep your DJ Sets in the DJ promotion forum I posted above.

Ok Im listening and typing this response as I go.

First Song: Sounds really cheesy. The Madonna filter effect on the vocals doesnt do much for me, and this song seems more like filler rather than an opener establishing a tone for the rest of your set. Makes me think of a cross between Eurodance and trance. Is the vocalist kate Bush?

First MIX: Rating - 2/10. You were only somewhat beatmatched, but it sounds like all you did was just move the crossfader over so the new song could be heard. There really was no transition, it was just like SongA was playing, SongA and Song B were playing at the same time, SongA faded out. Evrything just happened too soon, there was no movement between the two songs.

Second Song: Sounds alot better to start with. Im not familiar with the tune, but this sounds like its probably a popular trance song. Alot less like a dance piece. The vocals are kinda bad, I wouldve preffered a dub here, but this may be a matter of my personal preference. You really need to check your envelope levels here.

Second Mix: Rating - 5/10. Much better of a move into CSharp. You let the clave part build up through the other song along with the bassline, and brought things in and out rather that just slamming the crossfader over. I dont feel like you let song 2 play long enough though. Everything felt mixed too soon, and CSharp is notoriously easy to mix in and out of.

Third Song: The Quest - C Sharp. I prefer The Quest - Solitude, but this is arguably a classic trance song, and one that I love, despite the recent re-releases that have basterdized it.

Third Mix: Rating 4/10 - The bass from Song 4 came in a bit too soon, which really threw things off. Youre beatmatching is ok here, but needs a touch of improvement. Nice cue to make things sound good, but definitely not seamless. Drop C Sharp a little sooner for a cleaner sound. Also drop it gradually rather than just turning the volume off

Fourth Song: Dont recognize it, but it sounds ok. Very generic trance tune, complete with obligatory break beat moving to the buildup. That little bass flair before the first buildup was horrendous. Dont do it again. Song got a bit more diverse as it moved on, but nothign incredibly impressive.

Fourth Mix: Rating - 3/10. Not a good mix at all. While your beatmatching was better, there, again, was no transition. Sounds like you just kind brought the other song in, dropped the other song and let things go. The drop of bass (at one point) really disrupts the flow of your mix and kind of ruined the whole experience for me

Fifth song: Another generic trancer that Ive heard somewhere but cant name. Sounds like an ok song. Oh god, what is that!? These vocals really make me know why I never listened to this song (I think its Ligaya). The singing that comes in is, in a word, terrible. Use a dub in the future, if youre going to play this song at all. I fast forwarded through this song due to the horrendous Vocals/vocalist.

Fifth Mix: Rating 2/10 - You started this mix way too late, and Im not just saying that because of the low quality of the song 5. The beatmatching wasnt there at first, and things still sound forced. You should try gradually bringing things in and out rather than just letting the one song play over the other, then slamming the crossfader over. There is much more to mixing than just getting the beats somewhat aligned.

Song Six: Cool sounding song. As long as there are no terrible vocals, this song has some good potential. Im not too optimistic though, those vocal samples are foreshadowing another FFWD. haha yeah! Its 9PM (till I come). Im not a big fan of this song, but I havent heard the song in a long time (probably over 2 years), and Im not sure what this mix is but im digging it. Though I dont really detect a consistant tone or mood youre trying to set, youre picking average to good songs.

Sixth Mix: Rating 2/10 - Terrible. Im sorry, but Song 7 really just slammed in, with no transition, you dropped that mix of Till I come, and nothing was really mixed at all. This had some really good potential for a solid mix between the two vocalists, but you didnt bring it out. Quite disappointing.

Song Seven: Not too bad. I probably wouldve appreciated this more with a more solid mix into it. I know the tune, but cant name it. Another Generic trancer, complete with one repeated word, and a few phrases, all relating to the title.

Mix Seven: Rating 5/10 - Not a terrible mix, but again, everything was too sudden. This is the first time your bass from one song fit the tune of the song going out. Everything was properly beatmatched, but you brought the Gouryella tune in too late into the song and too quickly.

Song 8: Gouryella remix of Binary Finary's year series. Decent tune, but played by every trance newbs in sets.

Mix eight: Rating 4/10 - Like CSharp, this Binary Finary remix is notoriously easy to mix in and out of. You did not take advantage of this, instead choosing to bring song nine in loudly, fade out song eight and slam the fade over after 8 beats, with the ocassional return to song 8.

Song Nine: I think this is a Blank & jone ssong i never got around to listening to. It sounds ok. Another average 2001 and before era trancer

Mix Nine: Rating 5.5/10 - Really good transition, especially with the bass here. Things gradually moved away. Though not seemless, I felt the move in that direction.

Song Ten: Punk? This is an ok song, but overplayed. Again, this doesnt fit any type of tone....just seems like you said, I like Punk, Ill drop it here.

Mix Ten: Rating 0/10 - Awful. There was no mix. You didnt even bother playing both songs at once this time, you just slammed the fader over. This ocassionaly works, but not even remotely this time.

Song Eleven: Sounds like another vocal cheeser trancer. Hmm i was right...4 Strings - Let it Rain. This song isnt too bad with the vocals at the beginning, but just feels really out of place. I feel like this song wouldve benefited from different placing, maybe earlier in the set, or perhaps staying in your record box. Of course, once she starts singing the chorus, this song gets terrible.

Mix Eleven: Rating 4/10 - Kind of beatmatched. The variable kick between Song 12 and Eleven kind of works for you, but is rather distracting. Overall, this mix was a bit better because you let it go over several beats rather than just king it over after 8. Song 12 couldve taken major advantage of those cowbells, but you neglected to do so.

Song Twelve: This sounds like an old Dumonde Remix that I cant name. Cool song, but wouldve really benefited from a better mix. Please ID this song for me. Oh wait, its saxuality! This is a great tune man. You shouldve mixed this better.

Mix Twelve: Rating 3/10 - Everything too sudden again. Not only that, but you let things die then tried to use a live bassline. At this point, Im wondering how many Gouryella tunes youre going to drop in this set. Everything was beatmatched, at least.

Song Thirteen - Gouryella - Gouryella. You must really like Gouryella.

Mix Thirteen: rating 3/10 - Things were somewhat gradual on the bass front, but the mix just wasnt smooth, seamless or really any good. You didnt bring in Song 14 loud enough before dropping Gouryella. This really wasn an impressive mix.

Song Fourteen: Sounds ok. This is a remix of Why does my heart feel so bad. Dont know the mix, but its not total cheese, nor terrible. Pretty average song.

Mix Fourteen rating 4/10 - Mixing and beatmatching couldve been much better. All your mixes seem to be rather sudden, though this was a bit better than your average.

Song Fiveteen: EDIT - I mistakenly identified this song as a remix of C Sharp, when it was obviously Airwave. Pretty poor on my part. However, as I mention below, this is a really cliche song to include in a trance set. Good ending song, but its been done so many times, its hard to enjoy.

OVERALL RATING: 3/10

SUMMARY

You are not Tiesto, Armin, or PVD. Thus, you can not get away with quick mixes where you kinda just slam one song in while fading another out. You seem to think that by loading your set up with "classic" tunes, people will not notice your quick mixing, but your lack of effort on your transitions was most disappointing. This seems like an average first mix, in respect to both mixing quality and tracklist. Classics are nice to hear, but you picked all the cliche ones. Try going outside of the normal magik tunes and other things people banged to death in the late 90s and find some old songs (or mixes) people kind of remember but that didnt get overplayed. Good luck to you, hope to hear some improvement and better sets in the future

Thanks, i edited my reply. I have my own sets, but theyre certainly not professionaly level, and not something id bother posting on TA anyways. Like i said, your set is a nice novice set, and really indicative of where you are in respect to trance music and mixing. Youve just got to learn what makes a good mix. You had some great aspects in this mix, but no one truly solid transition. Work on longer, more gradual transitions and youll be on your way.

hey thanks for reviewing my set.. i actually know i did a poor job on this because i mixed it at 3 in the morining (PST) and there for i didint have the correct mind set.. i guess i just need to let the record finish and then mix a new one to make it sound better. the only problem is that i get tired and hyper on the live record so i try to mix it as fast as i can.. once again thank you.

If you want, Ill send you a mix I did earlier this year, which kind of illustrates both points I had in the reveiew post. The mix definitely has some good and bad points, and like I said, Im no professional, but I think you might be able to hear some of the things i was talking about. If you PM me your MSN address or AIM name, ill send it that way.
