It's in the sound of the track: the BPM, the samples used, the ambience it creates and so on. You can't just go and read in a book what all the genres are, you just have to listen to a lot of bloody music, try and work out which genre people pidgeon-hole certain tracks into, and once you've got enough experience you should be able to differentiate between most of the different genres.

Not a lot of help, I know, but it's the only way.

First Techno v Trance. Techno as a style has been around longer than trance. american djs in Detroit pioneered this sound in the late 80's. typically it has a minimal sound, i would add monotonous and mechanical but it seems to have its devotees, it does not rely on melody or big build ups etc. Probably the biggest name dj in this genre is Jeff Mills

Types of Trance

Ambient- doesnt have a bass line, an adequate description i guess would be to think of float tank music. I dont know of any djs that play this genre exclusively, definitely no big name djs do

Progressive

a type of music that came out of the UK in the 90's, it often has a percussive sound. Again it doesnt rely on sudden build ups and breakdowns and big chorus's. In other words the style is not as in your face as euro trance, i guess you could says its more subtle. The biggest name dj's in this genre are Sasha and Digweed. This is the most popular music played by the big names at the moment.

Euro Trance

A style that was popular about 2 years ago, until a flood of this style of music entered the market which was inferior to the original stuff meaning that djs who wanted to stay credible moved away from playing it. Uplifting, anthemic, hands, in the air E music is the best way to describe it. The biggest name dj in this genre is Ferry Corsten.

I don't really know about that, he doen't seem to havea good opinion toward trance, the thing is informative, but that bastard called me a pussy, didn't like that too much. I actaully like pretty much all the genres except non melodic, synchronised noise house.

Well, it is his opinion only.Anyways, i believe he doesnt like it because (like me) he is really into Techno and more likely into Acid Techno, that's why he doesnt like such a soft genre as dream trance
