Goa. Got to love the multiple layers and constant changing.

What's yours?

So you're choosing Goa over Psy? And your reasoning behind loving it really doesn't differentiate it too much from the other genres out there - in fact I would go so far as to say that Goa and Psy are some of the genres that change the least (next to true progressive house, a la Hernan Cattaneo). After all, the objective in a Goa/Psy track is to send the listener into a trance - repetition is the best way to do this, as constant change will only keep the listener perked up.

As an example, I'll use Simon Posford, easily one of the most influential psy producers.

Hallucinogen - LSD

The same themes are endlessly repeated throughout the record. Additionally, they all happen to be acid-riffs. The percussion is almost completely static, with scant few changes that actually do more to take you out of a trance-like state than constant repetition would.

What you percieve as a constant change is in fact the exact same musical motif being repeated over and over, with the synth going through painfully obvious filter sweeps.

With psy as a genre, generally the kicks are nearly always synthesized, the effects are nearly always reminiscent of space, the lead synth almost always the result of frequency modulation, and the (modern) bassline a series of 16th notes in short, easily recognizable patterns. If there are vocals, they will almost always deal with drug use, the unknown, the human psyche, or old sci-fi movies.

These common elements make psy more repetitive than changing, both within individual records, and within the genre as a whole.

And eh, I have no favorite genre. I listen to nearly all forms of house, trance (yes this includes psy/goa, for psy and goa are awesome), techno, Drum n Bass, breaks......basically anything besides the "cores" (hardcore, speedcore, etc..) and pop music (hugely popular rap, trance, house, etc...). Not that I feel it's my duty as a person to stray away from the mainstream and listen to the more "underground" artists, but I simply don't like the kind of music that makes it to the top of the charts.
