The day Toronto finishes building its football specific stadium there’s no doubt that the MLS will be looking to expand beyond the borders of the United States. Toronto has a worthy football market and it’s proven itself in the days of NASL. For the misinformed noobs talking out of their ass about the fervour of the North American football scene, I’d recommend a few thorough google searches on the late 70’s Toronto Metros, early 80’s Toronto Blizzard, Juve connections, H-block, Roby Bettega etc…
Today the football reality in Toronto is quite different, Canada is nowhere on the world’s football map whereas our southern neighbours are deservedly in FIFA’s top 20, not that many people take those rankings seriously. The US have a quality national team composed of players evolving in Europe’s top leagues, however it should be noted that the trend is changing as more MLS players represent the nation, they have a strong domestic league, they have built several football specific stadiums in the last few years and more are on the way… The football fever has proliferated throughout the US since ’94 at unexpected rates.
The MLS regardless of unjustified and often ignorant criticism has become quite a respectable league, it has produced several quality players that have adjusted in elite Euro leagues. This continent has a massive pool of young talent and the MLS serves as a trampoline to the EPLs, the Bundesligas... I’ve made the trek south of the border for a few encounters and I was exceedingly pleased with the quality of football and the atmosphere surrounding it. I’ve had the chance to catch Tim Howard in his last game for NY, which was a thrilling 3-3 draw against New England. There were half a dozen of busloads of NY Ultras who made the trip; that’s the kind of passion that is the very foundation of our religion. In terms of atmosphere, it was surprisingly, drastically superior to many games that I’ve caught throughout Europe. If you think MLS is no thrill let me disabuse you of that notion. I’d travel 500kms for an MLS match any day rather than watch European football action on a television set. The MLS generates massive interest throughout the country, attendance is more than respectable, the passion is there, obviously not at the desired level but nothing is accomplished over night. Ultras firm flourish in all corners of the US, the most impressive being the Chicage crew, which is composed of several thousand strong partisans, mostly Polish and other eastern-Europeans.
I hope MLS will find its way to Toronto, all that’s needed is a strong first season; a competitive football club surely won’t lack support in the city. Atmosphere is the heart and soul of football, it’s what makes it the unparalleled sport on the planet, I hope the ones who paint themselves as diehards on here will be in the midst of the Toronto Ultras section when time comes to walk the walk.
