Studying (and working) in Montreal?

hi guys!

I'm currently studying at Växjö University here in Sweden, taking some courses in media technology - but I'm tired of all the bullshit going on around here. The teachers are asses, they don't know shit about anything and the treat us like garbage....I've been wasting two years at this piece of shit institution (the rest of the university I hear is pretty good though), so I've made some serious thinking....

I'm moving out of here - I'd rather take a loan and spend a couple of 2-300.000 SEK (approx. £40-60.000 CND) for a few years studying at a decent school than wasting another three years here. The question is only where. There are a few good design schools here in Sweden which has got a good reputation, such as Bergh's school of communication, for example, but I'm also willing to give studies abroad a chance, and Canada is one of the countries in which I'd concider studying in, especially Montreal since I'm a die hard Canadiens fan (even though we may never se another puck being dropped in the NHL), but I've also heard a lot of great things about the city. As far as clubbing goes, the culture in Montreal is greater than it is in the whole of Sweden, so I don't even know what I'm waiting for...?

What I'm asking for is if anybody knows any "decent" schools in Montreal (or any where else nearby Montreal in Canada) where foreign students may apply for courses and programs? I haven't really figured out what I want to study yet (it would be about time though), but I'm looking for art schools of some kinds to look into....photography (still or movie photog.), art directing or something similar that needs your creative attention rather than your logical....

And how does the future of employment in any of these business look in Montreal and rest of Canada? Is it hard, not to say impossible, to get a job in Montreal? Are the schools over there in any way connected to companies? Do the schools for example offer trainee programs at related and closely connected enterprises for the students, where you could have a possible future employment after finished studies?

I'd really appreciate if you could give me some guidance in this matter.

Oh - and one more thing - I don't know jack when it comes to French, so only English schools please.

Cheers (and if things go well, I might even see you in Montreal this fall )
Laszlo

Let me start by saying that as long as you don't mind the cold, you will LOVE Montreal. Best city on Earth, and from every perspective imaginable.

From an education perspective, it's top notch. The best two English speaking universities in Montreal are McGill (Click here for their website) and Concordia (Click here for their website).

I don't know much about the Arts as I'm a science person, but from hearsay and from friend's opinions, Concordia supposedely has a great Communications program, geared towards things that I'm sure you'd be interested in (Multimedia, photography, directing and so forth). McGill, though, has a better reputation world-wide, so if you're looking for a good-name university, you would definitely have to consider it, although I'm pretty sure their Arts options are more limited than Concordia's.

From a work perspective, I wouldn't know much as to employment opportunites in the Arts, so you'll have to inquire about that with someone else, although a good place to start would be McGill and Concordia's career centers and job opportunity placement programs (accessible through their websites I believe). You can even give them a call to inquire about opportunities.

Finally, from every other perspective, this city rocks. It should be a no-brainer for you, especially if you like EDM, the Canadiens, and enjoy having a social life.

Hope this helps, and good luck with the search.

Well, first of all, thanks to Epicurus for the reply. I'm familiar with McGill's University, but not Concordia - I'll take a closer look into both of them. I've heard Montreal has about the same type of climate that Sweden has, so long, cold and dark winters aren't anything new to me.

As far as Craig Rivet jerseys go, don't worry - I won't let go of my Koivu jersey without a fight, and one with Theodore's name on the back is the next one which is up for purchase

To all others, sorry to dissapoint you but the girl on my avatar is not me, and she isn't Swedish either. I'm a guy and she is just an ordinary "love of my life" kind of chick, the problem is that she lives in Romania and I only get to see her one or two times a year. I suppose things won't get better if I move to Montreal, but hey...you lose some, you get some...
