PFTAs X of the Year 2004

In the other thread about Time magazine's Person of the Year, there was some disagreement about whether Bush deserved the award, so I thought we might have a nomination thread about the Person of the Year as seen by PFTAs. I take it that solid media coverage alone is not enough to warrant a nomination (excluding Michael Jackson, David Beckham etc.), but that the Person should have had an extraordinary impact on world affairs. Following the tradition of Time, "Person" can be both an abstraction (Earth) or a group of Persons. Further, Bush is probably a natural nominee considering Time's award.

My suggestions:
- The Dollar/Euro exchange rate.
- The decapitated hostages in Iraq.
- Ghadaffi.
- Erdogan.

Others? Criticism?

I really think 2003 is a good choice for Bush, especially considering its the year that won his second term...

If it was 2002, we could do Saddam, but since this is the year he was captured thats sort of out.

Not much else, Putin looks like he's going for 05.. but he's been quite till recently.

^^^ 2003=2004?

I thought about Sharon. His commitment to the withdrawal from Gaza might be seen as one of the most important developments in 2004. Another choice could be the EU - the inclusion of the former east block countries this year has to be considered historic.

If I were to label any developments in the war of Iraq as a 2003 issue (which Bush got hands down imo), and if I had my way, I would label the "thing of the year" for 2004 would be the Mars rover landings. Very underreported imo.

Culturally or socially the thing of the year would be either the apple i-pod or paris hilton. How sad is that?

When i think of it, probably the most important events of the years are this, not that they are persons but still

-EU enlargment + new EU consitution (it has been a very eventful EU year)
-Terrorists/beheadings etc in Iraq (US will probably take it more careful in the future before invading countries and think it will be easy. and who knows what will happend with iraq, will the US even win the war?)
-Bush gets reelected (who knows what this will mean?)

I'll have (in no particular order)...

GW Bush (as significance to world affairs not that I think he deserves an award of any kind!)

Yasser Arafat

Leigh Bromby
