Starting the next record

Hi,

I want to know when do you actually start the 2nd record (while the 1st record is stil playing). It is beatmatched, i understand bars (4 beats), then 4 bars is a phrase. Do you start your next record on the 8th bar or the 16th bar? Cheers.

Usually you want to find the first beat of a phrase on the incoming track and then cue that beat when the live track starts a new phrase. Its just a matter of knowing where your records phrases start/end.

Is it ok to start the first phrase of the incoming track on the very first beat of the incoming track? Or is it better to let the incoming song play in the headphoens and wait for the 2nd or 3rd phrase to begin then cue it up with the phrase of the playing track?

I like to use the first beat of the first phrase alot but its definitely OK to start on the second phrase or the third phrase. I play alot of styles with broken beats so I cue those on the second beat(snare drum). The key is to make sure the phrases are lined up. You don't want one of you tracks to start a new phrase and then 5 beats later the track you're mixing in starts a new phrase. Thats a big no-no, other than that cue on whatever beat you prefer on whichever phrase you think sounds the best as long as they're matched its cool.

radders, to answer ur question (which no one really did)

each phrase is usually every 8 bars (32 beats) or 16 bars (64 beats). really depends on the track. some tracks have the melody or elements in the track that repeat every 8 bars, some are for every 16 bars. however, u'll find that even tho melodies sometime repeat every 8 bars, the really big buildups with main effects, etc., come on every 16. if u time the records right, usually starting the record on every 16th bar will have good sounding results with the effects, and entrances of melodies coming in at the right time. but sometimes u'll find that the melodies/effects will become messy because either the outro and intro sounds are overlapping, starting the incoming record 8 bars later can usually clear up the messiness of sounds while mixing records. this becomes especially useful if u are mixing out of tracks early while it is still towards the middle of the track. hope this info helps.

it depends on the track. some you can let it go in the 8th bar, some the 16th.
