Subey's Guide to Trance:

Trance is a form of EDM. D = Dance, and as such has been perceived as a style of music designed for gyrating bodies on a dance floor.

The community that listened to this music on their own time (i.e. off the Dance floor) wanted to break free of that, it wanted to be as legitimate as classical, it wanted to update classical into a form of music that embraced the advances in musical technology, it wanted to be justified as a form of music whose value was in the quality of the music, not in the ability of the beat to make you shake your ass. But because it was dance music no one gave it any respect.

Trance took the first step towards acheiving legitimacy. It took a step away from the dance floor by adding parts to itself that were not condusive to dancing... but it wasn't enough. People still thought it was "Rave" music, and if you weren't on drugs or dancing there was no way you could actually like it.

So a bunch of DJs and Producers did the only thing they could to try and free themselves from the dance floor... they started a form of music that was basically 100% undanceable. That is Progressive Trance (still under the yoke of EDM). Their point? To prove that a purely digital form of music was in fact real legitimate music.

At first it sucked... but as time went on the producers learned how to squeeze the music out of it. So they toiled away for years... and a community grew up around them and supported them. Bought their records giving them enough money to continue.

They succeeded. The world at large still didn't know, but they knew, they were making and listening to real music. Not only that but really really good music. They had established the fact that synths and computer programs were 100% legitimate tools in the creation of REAL MUSIC.

Then there was a problem for the prog community though. They lost the plot. They commited the same sin that the public at large committed. In legitimizing PROG they felt that the "fun and accessible" sound of Trance must be made illigitimate in order to emphasize how REAL PROG was.

There was a second problem... PROG had freed the producers and the djs and the community from Dance floor. So some producers took a step back from the musical pole that was Progressive. There was no word to describe it... so people just labelled it based on the style that gave it birth.. so in order to help establish that it wasn't legitimate the PROG community called it MCPROG.

So a new era began. Classical music had come full circle and had been reborn. Just as the electric guitar revolutionized the musical world... the computer had developed enough to let artists use it as the upgrade to classical music.

Trance is legtimate.
Prog is legitimate.
McProg is legitimate.

DJs and Radio shows who play any of the above are legitimate.

McProg is fantastic... I love Trance... I love Progressive... and guess what? I love this new shit that's somewhere in between.
MCPROG needs a new name... let's decide on a name together. And MCPROG ain't it! And TRANCE shouldn't be anywhere in the title either!

Yes, it's legitimate. However, people should understand that it isn't progressive at all.

Naw, Oliver Lieb proved that Trance was "real legitimate music" before progressive was invented.

And Trance was well respected before progressive was invented as well. There are so many holes in your story it's not even funny.

sorry mate i didnt read all your post.. but from what i gathered, your saying that 'mcprog' this thing that is either loved or hated, is a bastard child of a form of prog that was once the shit?

well, one thing that possibly [if im correct in my deductions] you need to realise, is that this same thing happened with a lot of forms of music... nearly all forms of music have theyre year of recognition, and in this year we get your dj sammy's your flip n fill's, of whatever genre it is.

what started with your gabriel n dresdens, ended in your gabrial n dreadfuls.

as soon as a genre achieves its numbers, you get your haters.... ppl thatll infinately say 'what your listening to now is a shadow of its former self like when i listened to it. which sooner or later results in the decline,and eventually the eradication of a genre.

happned with trance. and before i get some twat that signed up a month ago telling me armin is the be all and end all.... no he was in 99 he was in 2000, hes not anymore and what ppl were experienceing 4 years ago ws infinatly more credible than the trance of now a days... or is it?... this is one big cycle that happens with every genre under the EDM abbreviation, and at the end of the day. what you got into 2 years ago, IS a different sound now. like it or not what you DID like , is now what someone ELSE likes, because they like for how it sounds now.

Ory is on crack, he is just trying to be me. Look Ory, Rank 1's Airwave was always trance in my book. If it does not fit your definition of trance, then what does it fit?

Crap? Airwave was well produced and it had no IMMENSE breakdown, it worked well in a lot of sets.

There are too many definitions of trance.
