Over the holidays, our family gets together including my brother in law, Rob Brooks, who is Senior VP of EMI Capitol for marketing.We always talk about the legal issues around copy rights & downloading and he says that the Canadian government isn't very interested right now with this problem unlike Australia where they are goin after individuals who are downloading/file sharing music.He told me that its VERY frustrating for EMI in Canada.BUt yeah...Canada is the ONLY country where lawsuits against people for pirating music are not occuring....yet

Personally I don't look for the mainstream music on Kaaza and I told him that I only download trance tracks that isn't readily available per say...He's still not impressed but thats his job...

The difference between Canada and those other countries is that the Canadian government decided on a different solution to the problem a long time ago: taxes. I forget exactly how much the levy is, but for every blank tape or CD-R or DVD-R that's bought, a certain percentage of that goes to the recording industry here. That compensates the industry for any losses they may incur (and then some!).

Does that make it "right" for individuals to copy copyrighted material? Not really, but it does mean that if the recording industry decided to start filing lawsuits, there'd be no excuse to continue the levy on blank media and they'd lose A LOT more money that way.

So the attitude of the Canadian courts to the industry is, "bugger off, we took care of this 20 years ago." And rightly so. If the government wants to remove the levy, THEN maybe we can start talking about copyright issues. But for some reason the industry doesn't seem to be pushing to have that levy removed (a mere oversight, I'm sure).

Tell this guy that companies like EMI need to get behind unified online services to provide a wider variety. They also need to stop shutting out small labels and independents from that process. I think the appeal of downloading now is due to the sheer variety that is available. Practically anything you want new or old is available on soulseek etc. This is why i use it the rare times that i do. It simply has the variety that im looking for that most music stores and online sites dont have.

Thats interesting...He may have told us the reasons as well but I can't remember...Next time I see him, I'll have to ask but your proly right about that Tax levy on blank CDs thing.

Actually I know that he was heading up an online service with EMI to compete with other payed downloading services but we didn't talk about that.Something ELSE I have to ask him about next time I see him
