Hanging Up The Headphones...

time for a bit of interesting semi off-topic discussion for once

every now and then i get really sick of djing or producing or both. it is generally djing though. however i find it very easy just to slip back into that when i hear some nice new tunes, albeit generally unsigned ones.

with producing though, if i leave it, i feel as though i have gone 'off the boil' so to speak and it takes me a real jolt to get going. having had a couple of weeks not touching the production gear then having a go at playing around making some melodies and nothing happening, then i get a chance to mix a track with an amazing melody for a friend and i'm right back into it and loving it all over again!

i haven't touched my decks in nearly 2 weeks except from when my friend came over and we played some random electro + house which was cool.

anybody else had the same kinda experiences like this, surely i can't be a lone saddo

I have that from time to time w/ my decks... but it usually is due to my real job or fiance taking up most of my time. Now that I have moved in w/ my fiance, I find that I can spend both quality time w/ her as well as spin / produce and do my hobbies.

You're definitely not a lone saddo, Luke. My ability to produce has always come and gone every so often, but just this year it's been going more often and for longer than ever before. It's really quite frustrating, actually, because I would like nothing better than to be churning out tracks all over the place. Mind you, arguably the standard of my productions has been better this year than last.

I'm not even sure what I'm talking about anymore.

Oh, that was it. You said that you got right back into producing after hearing an amazing melody, and I think that's something to bear in mind. If you're having a hard time coming up with anything solid (and I'm familiar with that having amassed 137 useless Reason files this year), take a step back and immerse yourself in music. You could do a lot worse things to become inspired!

EDIT: ...but you're a DJ, so you're already listening to music all the time. Oh well, it was rubbish advice anyway because it doesn't work for me, hehe.

if you only made 1 track a year and it be as good as your genesis remix is, i certainly wouldn't complain, even tho i love pretty much everything you have sent me this year

heh ive mixed like about 5 sets in the last 8 months. somehow managed to pull out a really good mix on the last one, god knows how. also i didnt produce anything finished for about 4 months before my oasis remix which is by far the best thing ive done so maybe taking a break can sometimes be good for you

I'm not even sure I can call myself producer anymore. The rare instances I actually do do something it's a collab with someone else. I just don't feel it like I used to, I find DJ'ing a lot more appealing these days.

Oh yes me also.

Am so frustrated that i can't make any originals any more on my own, yes my sunquest remix turned out good as some say and am happy about that. But i wanne create something with my name only, like Shinsharaa. I tend to fail alot, and they say it's just a phase, but this phase is going on since August???

To tell you the truth am thinking of quitting, probably after new year if i didn't make anything till then.

No point to call your self a producer if you can't make anything on your own, And they say it's best to stop at your highest peak. Pushing your self is not good either.

Massive84- U should keep on working on those stuff. Same goes to alot of ppl. Hah. I was none better then u guys out there. Now my brain is totally dead. Beside DJing, which is more appealing like Mystery mention, I moved into Photographying now. Take up other hobbies then U move on back again.

U find something great later on. Move on and thats the key of life. (I also wanna give up.. wondering did I over spent so much and not a single good tune is out?)

IMHO

Some of you guys may know that I studied for Sound Technician for three years, then moved op to Sound engineer studies. A lot of work and concentration goes into that. Especially that I'm not the kind of guy that just goes to school to follow the courses, and study them just when there are exams.

No, I'm more the type of guy that thinks that working in sound is a way of life. I'm actively busy the whole day with some aspect of sound. Usually that means that I'm waking up very early to work on something, and come home very late, very exhausted.

The fact that I became a supervisor in one of the schools doesn't help that either (it means I'm doing some recording/mixing jobs in the only time I got left : at night).

Practically, what does it mean : I'm usually too tired to even turn my TT's on. And when I'm not, I usually am not in the mood to "actively listen" to that kind of music anymore. It must have been 1.5 years since I've actually made a decent mix (read more than 30 minutes). The funny thing is I still buy records when I got the time. Records I've never touched since then.

And well, producing. Starting to produce has crossed my mind, but it's the same problem... And besides, I'm someone that's more comfortable with using the technology than with creativity.

Maybe later, maybe never again...

Oh yeah, that's the other thing I forgot to mention.
The drop in my production speed started just about the same time I started my job a bit less than a year ago. I sometimes work 20 hour shifts and my job is physically demanding (not to mention not rewarding in any way, it's a dead end job) so whenever I get home I just want to relax - producing is the last thing that crosses my mind then.

Oh well, pretty soon I'll be gone from my PC for 6 months so maybe that'll help me find the spark again.

It goes up and down for me all the time. Right now I haven't mixed more than one set in the last 2 months and I haven't finished a track off since june or july.

I can't say that I'm dissapointed in myself in any way for not being more creative. If I can't come up with material for a good track then so be it, I don't feel like pushing myself over any limits just to create a nice track.
