Here are 2 experimental prog/tech tracks I made, focusing more on percussion and clarity of sound. They are different from my normal style as you will hear
hibernate reminds me at some point something :P , wow your percusion is so amazing its very clean , what do you use to making track actually??
both track are great
Hibernate:
- Like the way the track opens in a nice closed atmosphere
- Love the rythm and drive of the percussion. Some of the hats sound a bit too "plasticy" to me.
- The effect at 00:50 is really nice.. from a chorusy stereo - gathering to a point in the stereo image.. i would like to hear that one a bit more defined.
- 02:52 i would like the sine-arp just together with the bass and some very distant almost unnoticeable perc, creating the same closed atmosphere as in the beginning of the track.. then opening slowly up again at 03:13 to 03:21.
All in all a good track.. nice calm vibe! I feel some of the elements lack a bit more high end sheen to really make them pop out of the image. Although, this is hard to achieve when you also want it to be smooth. Instead of pulling off stuff at 4.5, 8 and 13.5khz and such, try running some sounds through a de-esser. Can sometimes work magic by killing off the nasty frequencies the ear doesnt like - but still keeping the clarity and definition. Also i feel the kick is 0.4 to 0.5 db too high, and that by swamping it a bit more in the mix - the atmosphere of the track will increase.
Stratosphere:
- the offbeat rimshot without attack is a bit too loud (0.9 or so), and could perhaps be panned +10 or more to the left.
- The feeling when the chorused bass enters is amazing - wasnt expecting something like that at all. Great!
- Wow.. Love the pulsating back and forth drive
- 01:55 A short pulse of short hits or something leading up to 01:56 could be cool here.. Or something to make this point a bit more defined.
- 03:52 the hat is a bit loud when it enters (0.7 or so).
- In a whole - a very nice break! excellent buildup. My toes dance when the whole thing kicks off again.
- 06:15 the atmosphere from here on is delicious. Dark and progressive. i love the feeling from this.
- 06:45 the sudden reverbed hit that opens the atmosphere again is VERY nice.. dont like the offbeat hat that comes along with it at all.. plasticy..
A very well balanced tune, everything falls into place nicely. If i was a dj at some massive underground dark progressive club - id play this track for sure! :P Same thing here about the hats as Hibernate - dont like some of em - but i guess thats more of a preference of taste. And i miss just that teeny bit of more definition in the sounds.. Im suspecting it could be something you do at mastering stage? With the eq'ing or settings in multiband compression.
All in all some excellent and well produced tracks - looking foreward to hearing more of this new direction you've taken
- Jahala
EDIT:
Disregard the bit about general high sheen on the tracks, it has to do with something i did with my monitoring (and forgot about).. But some sounds still lack a bit of definition imho.

thanks guys!
also thanks for the detailed comments jahala, yes - the mastering on hibernate is a different style to statosphere, less highs. thanks for the comments
Hibernate is really sweet, like it allot. Bass is really cool, same with the break.
Statosphere didn't really touch me.
Hope to hear more from you in 2005

Hibernate : the percussion got me right from the start, it carries the track very well. A very important thing in this sort of genre (in my opinion). The atmosphere is very nice as well. Only thing I didnt really like was the rhythm of those long bass notes. (Maybe the last note a 16th later or something).
Nothing to comment on production-wise from my side!
stratosphere : I like the bassline ! ( more than 1 different tone hight (is that even a word?) per measure, unlike most basslines out there). I like the breakdown and buildup from there a lot! (phasing glissando works well for this track).
Only thing that sounded a bit out of place might have been the snare drum one 16th before the 4th beat. Doesnt fit the track 100 % in my view. Other than that it's a great track, which reminded me a bit of a track by (or called) infernal machine.

0:00 I Like the Bass Drum.
0:58 Nice warm bass.
1:28 wow sounds great.
1:56 nice; the HHs give it more energy.
2:30 spacey pads tis good
2:55 ....3:20 sweet I really like this track. Great selection of sounds
4:20 beautiful
4:58 ...building up to a creusendo? ........ 5:44 I was hoping it would reach a higher level at this point; with all the layers combined to create an big energized finale.
This is one of the best productions I have heard on TA John. It is freaken seriously awesome stuff!
Stratosphere:
Again nice Bass. I love your large warm bass in your songs; especially in this one. The pads are spacy.
