Fun Failed Predictions

Inspired by this goofy quote I found in another thread, and in honour of the new year:
quote:

If you agree with the widening gaps, sooner or latar, 5-10 corporations will literally control the world by retaining the most money, and a democratic vote will have alot less power.

Here is my top 10 list of predictions people have been making for years (or even centuries) that still haven't come true:

Nostradamus: Unless you count JFK Jr.'s airplane crashing, 1999 was free of any disasters caused by enormous space projectiles!

Y2K: Still waiting for those planes to fall out of the sky!

The fall of the American "empire": Apparently we've been RIGHT on the verge of this since the 18th century. Reminds me of when my mom would say, "I'm only gonna count to three - one... two... two and a half... two and three quarters..."

The widening gap: Soon the whole world will be controlled by 5 corporations or less! Despite the ever increasing number of "Megacorps" out there like Procter & Gamble and General Electric, we seem to have more corporations than ever before. Could it be that *gasp* capitalism actually does not lead to an inevitable fascist dictatorship!?

Flying vehicles: I want my hoverbike, damn it. These things were supposed to be ready by the 90's.

The Second Coming: These predictions used to happen every 30 or 40 years. Now they come every 8 months. Jesus still isn't here yet - don't these people ever get tired of being wrong?

Nuclear War: The cold war is over, guys. That was back in the day when political leaders had ACTUAL stockpiles of nuclear weapons. Now there's just a handful.

Laser Pistols: I want my laser/phaser/disruptor already. You'd think if they're always handing out those cheesy pointers then they could juice it up a little and make me a death ray. It can't be just a coincidence that virtually every sci-fi show has lasers. I think they were invented 20 years ago and the government has been covering it up.

Genetic Engineering: According to Huxley, we should all be getting hatched out of test tubes by now. What's the holdup? Ever since they cloned that sheep, there's been no progress in this area! Maybe the human genome is a little more complex than originally thought? Or maybe folks just prefer sex over science.

Global Warming: The ice disaster was predicted for May 5, 2000 - never happened. One wonders how, in the absence of any reliable temperature/atmospheric data from before the 1950s, we can even be sure that this isn't a natural phenomenon. But all I know for sure is that it's fucking cold right now, and the only ice caps I've seen melt are the ones I bought at Tim Horton's back in the summertime.

Anybody else got some?

Did you know that we can within minutes of a nuclear attack on North America in 1995?

quote:
Considering that on January 25, 1995 Boris Yeltsin, then President of Russia, came within three minutes of initiating a full nuclear strike on the United States because of one scientific rocket Russians could not identify, this is hardly a fanciful scenario.

quote:
On 25 January, 1995, the Russian early warning radars detected an unexpected missile launch near Spitzbergen. The estimated flight time to Moscow was 5 minutes. The Russian President, the Defence Minister and the Chief of Staff were informed. The early warning and the control and command systems switched to combat mode. Within 5 minutes, the radars determined that the missile's impact point would be outside the Russian borders.

The missile was carrying instruments for scientific measurements. On 16 January Norway had notified 35 countries including Russia that the launch was planned. Information had apparently reached the Russian Defense Ministry, but failed to reach the on-duty personnel of the early warning system.

Okay so that's not really 1995, but let's not dwell on technicalities here.

Um, we literally have enough nuclear weapons to destroy the world something like ten times over.

I dont think you can count out flying cars, global warming or the fall of the american empire (esp with bush in office) quite yet.

And now that stupid little countries like india and north korea have nuclear weapons we are in more danger today than during the cold war.

I agree with you.. And genetic engineering hasn't been as prolific I would imagine becuase of all the laws that have been put into effect. However we've mapped the human genome, we use genetically engineered virus's for genetic diseases. These are applications that are already well used and well known. Forget all the conspiracy theories, who knows Russia or the U.S may of produced a prefect super soldier aha!

We've been doing this stuff since the eugenics experiements with the Nazi's. I highly doubt that a lab doing experimental stuff such as those doesn't exist. And if you look at genetically engineered plants it's actually already in practical applications already too.

Iran doesn't have Nuclear weapons just yet, nor the missles that have the range that can reach any country outside of Israel. However i'm sure with some time it'll happen.

This one was averted actually....Most AirLines use Mainframes/ As400's for their operations from ticketing to flight controls etc.....And the systems were patched midway through 1999....
