I like Donnie Darko better!
There's darkness! |
You're comparing Donnie Darko to Donnie Brasco?! You're kidding, right...
Donnie Darko doesn't even deserve to get mentioned on the same page as Donnie Brasco!
It's like me arguing over "good movies" that came out recently with some guy I see every once in a while, and then him going on saying that Spiderman was really good, both 1 and 2, this that... and somehow I mentioned the Godfather and Scarface (Pacino, I know). And he goes "What? I haven't seen those." End of story! Get outta here...
In my opinion, more than half of the movies that De Niro/Pacino have put out deserve to be among the Top 100 movies of all times. And if you don't think that such movies as Scarface, Godfather series, The Heat, etc are way up there, you need to lay off the video games for a few months...

Donnie Darko and Donnie Brasco are two completely different types of films, so it's stupid to even begin to compare them. One is about an FBI informant inflirtrating the MOB, the other, a surreal art house film that poses questions about the metaphyiscal.
I agree that De Niro and Pacino have acted in some great movies in their time, but when you look at the type of movies they have done subsequent to Scarface and Godfather, you'll realize that both men have been pretty lazy when it comes to picking quality projects.
Otherwise please explain how De Niro acts in a pile of crap like "15 minutes" or the truly attrocious "Rocky and Bullwinkle", and the sequel that should have never been made "Analyse that".
Pacino and De Niro in their prime delivered power house performances, but alas the days of "Raging Bull" and "Scarface" are gone. Now all you get from both these guys is a lackadasical turnout, and the same tired old shtick with Pacino raising his voice and turning into the angry old grump, and De Niro sleep walking through most of his roles.
There are exceptions of course...but on the whole, both of these guys have not really lived up to the talent that they showcased back in the 70's.
PS. The Sopranos kicks ass -- can't wait for the 6th Season ! After what was probably the most boring season 4, the writters really picked up the ball and delivered with Season 5 (although there were still a few EP's which left a little to be desired). Hopefully, D.Chase (the creator) will have some great plot lines in store for us in the final season of Tv's most infamous family
Oh, and if you like 'good' crime drama's, check out the first season of "The Wire" also on HBO for excellent writting and three dimensional characters. It makes the crappy network shows like CSI look like something a 10 year old would write.
