S/R does just what it says - sends sound to the effects processor, and recieves it, already processed. the difference from setting it up like this, or just between the mixer and amp, is, and correct me if i'm wrong, that if you have a S/R setup, you can select which channels you want to apply effects to, whereas if it's just between the mixer and amp, it will only affect the master output, and will render your REC out useless, as it will not give you the processed music, forcing you to, as someone already said, record from the amp.
