Tone arm help

EDIT: Problem fixed.

Hi everyone. Okay so I FINALLY got all of my equipment and I just tried installing/setting up everything. I am having a problem with my tone arm and cartridge though...

First off I am using a Technics M5G and a Shute Whitelabel (which has an integrated headshell).

According to the Technics manual I am suppossed to have the tonearm completely horizontal once the headshell and balance weight are installed (I took off the aux weight that screws into the balance weight because it was too heavy then). Well I can do that... I can adjust it so the tone arm is completely horizontal. Once I do that, I am then suppossed to put the tone arm back in the arm clamp, and then manually move the stylus pressrue control to 0. So then it is essentially calibrated at 0.

Okay so far so good. Well now according to the Shure manual, I am supposed to use a setting of anywhere between 2.5 - 3.5. Well if I use any of those settings (between 2.5 - 3.5) the tone arm shoots sky high... it's simply too heavy. Is this because the Shure cartridge is much lighter than the Technics headshell (which I've just not installed obviously since the Shure took it's place)? Am I calibrating something incorrectly?

Also, let's say I disregard the 2.5 - 3.5 setting... The needle is still just perfectly horizontal... it's not touching the vinyl! I tried lowering the arm height to 0. The arm lock is in the released position. Anti-skating is set to 0.

Am I missing something? Someone please help!

For the time being I have just gone with my "judgement" and just balanced it so that the tone arm is not horizontal, and the needle pushes down on the vinyl a little bit.

EDIT: For more info on the Shure White Label: http://www.needlz.com/cartridges/whitelabel.asp

Thanks guys,
Keith

You have to find 'point zero' first on that arm.
You can do that by using the weight on the arm. Your tone-arm has to float above your platter freely. It may not go to the spindle, and not going to your pitch, not going up and not falling down on the platter!

If you accomplished that...you have your 'point zero' Now turn the black ring on the weight and put it to zero. Now you can set the right 2.5 - 3.5 Mg for your needle.

That should work

^Guys I've done exactly that... I've found point 0. Not a problem... now as soon as I adjust from point 0 to 2.5 - 3.5.... the tone arm goes flying upwards!

Also, at point 0 + 2.5 - 3.5 the needle obviously does not fall onto the vinyl, but rather goes flying into the air...

ALSO...forgot to mention in my first post that yes, the cue lever is DOWN.

Yeah it sounds like you have your gauge/weights on backwards, more wieght should push the needle DOWN more, not up

Okay I think I may have just been turning it the other way. *ashamed*.

Either way, I turned it to 1 on the stylus adjustment knob and the needle presses down on the vinyl now.

Thanks,
Keith

Btw I think you dont have to set 2.5 - 3.5 grams.
I have set 1.5 grams when I just listen to vinyls, and when spinning I use max 2 grams. I think when you use more weight, the wear on the record is higher.
