200 Million Downloads!

its official, digital downloads have outsold singles! 200 million digital downloads worldwide in 2004, thats pretty impressive, and its about time. hopefully this will make more labels get involved with digital downloads and make absolutely everything available over the internet (including fucking techno).

will mp3's ever replace cd's as the most popular medium? we already have a digital chart here in the UK, and judging by last years figures it should overtake cd sales by even more this year.

Meh. I like my music to be solid and real, to come with cover art and writing credits. Call it old-fashioned, but having access to every track ever written at the click of a button totally removes their value. I hate these MP3 kids who will download a classic like its a new A&B remix and never get why it's so reverred. I still buy singles, and I think I always will.

this is definitely a step forward. Labels are finally accepting digital downloads, rather than fighting them. Its quite clear now with the broad avaliability of the internet that this is the future. I doubt digital downloads will ever replace cd's, or at least anytime soon, but it will certanly not dominate the market anymore.

as do i, i buy all my music on vinyl, but surely this IS a step forward with regards to piracy issues and stuff? there are now as many people paying for downloads as there are downloading illegally, and this is, what, 2 years after the beginning of pay-per-download services..?

i think that this news is great. it will never cease the sale of physical mediums such as cd or vinyl, but i certainly like the fact that it's given labels the kick up the arse they need!

I agree. Although digital music is handy, I still want that physical release that I can touch.

digital downloads will be cool as long as they arent the only way that tracks are released, if cd singles stop being sold ill be soo pissed off. i cant see vinyls lasting much longer, but there is no need to get rid of cd singles
