I've heard you just need to purchase a modem to upgrade to the higher speed internet, just wondering if that's all there is and if there are other charges but most importantly I'm wondering about the problems that come with it because I've heard of quite a few.
Should I be changing internet companies to something more reliable? I love how cable is connected all the time but it can be an annoyance as far as problems go sometimes and I'm wondering if ultimate is a bad upgrade.

i bought the new modem, speed doubled, no problems, no extra charges.
90bucks plus tax 112$ for the modem.
if you are lucky, you can call for a modem replacement, and they will replace it with the motorola modem.

Yeah I just did that last month. Its the same price every month, all you have to do is buy the modem, which it says is $99, but probably comes to $112 like arek said. Goes from like 800kbps to 3-5MB a second! Mad faster! hehe
They gave me the motorola modem same as arek

In order to get truly high-speed internet access from Rogers, you need to purchase a miracle.

you really dont pay for the modem, u pay for them connecting it up...cuz i had the motorola on teh extreme high speed and then i cancelled it cuz it waasnt goin as fast as i had hoped.
so when they came, they gave me a new motoralla modem and took the other one away. so the modem is free, but they charge for the connection.

I suggested upgrading to my dad but he told me he heard there were a lot of complaints because of problems with the service.
Is that old news from when they first started it or something?

I have extreme, and haven't noticed any significant change in the downtime now versus before.
I do find that the speed comes no where close to 5mb/sec though... speed tests typically put me in the 2-3 range (may have something to do with the fact that I live in a large apartment tower in the downtown core though... *shrug*)
i've upgraded to rogers extreme, and ever since then the speed was just insane... blazing! and no complaints about the service whatsoever... I used to call them up all the time a year or two ago when the connection went down, but this time I haven't called them in more than 5 months. that should tell you something...
also, if you are switching over to rogers hi-speed (meaning you're not a current customer already), PM me and I'll hook you up with the same deal I got - 2 months free for extreme (plus $10 fee if you're not with rogers cable tv already waived for a year) with you buying the modem for regular price, or $15 rebate per month for 6 months for express.

not true,if you want 5mbit line - you have to buy modem from any store, your not obligated to buy this one from Rogers.

It's not just the modem, goofs. You DO need a DOCSIS 2.0 modem to be able to take advantage of the "extreme high speed", but even if you've got the modem, your connection is still CAPPED unless you pay the extra money. I've got the Motorola sitting right in front of me and I can assure you it's not capable of more than about 400 kb/s (3.2 megabits) without changes on the server side.
Maybe I should pay them to uncap it... but right now I feel more inclined to just get DSL.
