Email re: comments made on Z103.5 morning show

This was a highly interesting read to me. My friend and manager here at work just forwarded this to me today!

He had heard something on the Z103.5 morning show that really appauled him and decided to write them and let his opinion be known about what he thought on the matter. He was quite surprised actually that Scott Fox took the time to respond. Here is the email correspondance.

I'd be very interested to hear yalls thoughts and opinions on this. Any comments....

LOL. I just read my reply again. It occurred to me that you might get the impression that I was calling you a tree hugging environmentalist. If you did get that impression, I understand why but that's not what I meant. I was trying to convey that I am in no way an environmentalist but I do understand the need for conservation.

All the best Darrin.

Hi Darrin,

#1 - Thank-you for taking the time to write. Your e-mail was very nice to read. Most people who disagree with something I say fire off the nastiest e-mails you've ever read. It gets a little frustrating after a while. Yours however was objective. Thanks!

#2 - I am not against conservation in any way. Although I am not a tree hugging environmentalist, I too realize the importance the preserving our environment for future generations. That being said, I can't find any room in the compassion area of my heart to feel bad when Hydro One and the government when they make their pleas for us to conserve when I hear that the A/C is cranked at the Hydro-One offices and at Queen's Park, that street lights are being turned on at 5 in the afternoon because nobody has bothered to put them on summer hours yet, that they were watering the lawn yesterday at City Hall, etc. During a massive heat wave they want me to set my thermostat at 76 or higher, when they have there thermostat at 73 isn't exactly practicing what you preach. Telling me to turn off my lights when their Bay Street office is lit up like a Christmas tree isn't practicing what you preach.

As for the money they are making ... again I can't feel bad that they have to import power and make less money when I see the ridiculous salaries that are being paid out at Hydro One. Clearly, they are / were making enough profit to justify those kind of numbers. It certainly didn't get reinvested in infrastructure or last year's blackout likely wouldn't have happened on the scale that it did.

Again, thanks for taking the time to write. I hope I addressed your concerns. It's always tough in an e-mail. All the best. Enjoy your weekend.

Dear Scott, Melanie and Dave,

I listen to Z all the time and I particularly love your guys morning show. I suffered through the years of continuous bad morning show announcers at Z (and it's various other names) and you guys are definitely the best show Z has ever had and quite possibly in the Country. You are always entertaining but you also tackle hard issues and have candid on air debates about various serious world events. So keep up the good work.

I am not someone that normally would send an e-mail and complain or tell you I didn't like something. However, this morning I was going to work late and listening to your show just after 9:00 and I was quite disturbed by some comments that you made Scott. You were talking about watering your lawn and conserving energy. You stated that you were not going to conserve energy unless it cost you too much and that the hydro companies were telling us to conserve but in reality because they were making soooo much money they really wanted us to use as much as possible. I found those comments to be uninformed, damaging and irresponsible. First of all hydro companies are rate regulated enterprises that have the amount of income that they can earn fixed annually. We currently have subsidized hydro rates in this province and as high as the rates seem now they certainly do not reflect the "true" cost of electricity. We are paying for this cost through the income tax system. On days like today when consumption is reaching all time new peaks we are buying power from the Northern United States and our coal fired plants and nuclear generators are at maximum capacity. So even if you think this is great for the profits of the hydro companies I am appalled that you would make these comments when you consider the effects on our environment. Already this year we have had 33 smog advisories and the air we breath will only get worse if people continue to hold the attitude that you demonstrated on air this morning. In an era of Kyoto Accord Protocol commitments and increasing environmental awareness I was amazed to hear these comments from you this morning. I generally agree with almost everything you say but I feel so strongly about your position of influence over your young listening audience that I think you did mountains of damage this morning in influencing others to have the same "screw conservation" attitude that you basically stated on air this morning.

Do you not remember the blackout of 2003. Peoples lives, and the economy were effected for weeks. Food had to be thrown out in grocery stores. It was a tremendous hit to arts entertainment that lost revenue from cancelled shows. If you think that can't happen again and won't you are seriously kidding yourself. There have already been rolling blackouts in some communities and if power consumption continues at these levels the load on the system could very well cause a massive blackout again. But even if the power doesn't go out does it just not make sense to try and make the environment healthier. If we don't conserve and try and change attitudes when and who will do this?

Sorry Scott I just had to let you know I disagree strongly with your comments this morning.

Darrin

Your friend found THAT comment appaling?
Either way, seems like an honest response.

Wow, thanks for sharing, Jem. Your boss sounds like an awesome and well-informed person. I agree with him 100%.

The only thing I can say to Scott is that "two wrongs don't make a right". If he's disappointed with the actions that Hydro One and the province are taking, then he should make COMMENTS about them, not ADD to the problems. A bit immature IMO, but it was still good that there was a dialogue that occurred. Gotta respect that, and it's nice to see that he even complimented your boss' style.

I never really gave a shit about the environment in the past but my fiancee has really been converting me over; and I find that I'm scheduling the temperature so that the A/C is off when we're not home and that it turns off overnight (back on when we're waking up)...

Unfortunetely you are probably wasting more energy doing that then leaving your AC on. It takes a lot more to cool down the house everytime then to keep it at a certain temperature constantly. Once the house cools down the AC turns itself on only when it needs too. Set your thermostat for a higher temp setting and leave it on.

Smart things Fay for sure... thanks for the response man! Im def not an intense environmentalist, but doing small things that really are key to helping preserve whut we have are important I feel. we all can contribute whut little (or a lot) we can. plus IMO these dont really impact upon me in a serious way -- so why not do them, you konw?

Actually, I believe this is correct.

I recall having a discussion w/ a professor at UW about how if you are leaving a room for a short period of time (say less than an hour.... i forget the exact ballpark range of time), it actually uses MORE electricity to turn off the light when u leave then turn it back on when u return.

you are better off (money wise) to leave the light running..... i fonud that very interesting.

Wow, both interesting points (about A/C and lights)...

Re: A/C, I don't wait for the room to get to the temp I want (which is 78), it will always shut down at 9 am and turn back on at 4 pm...as everyone in my family is away from the house at that time (on weekends we'd do what you che was saying).

Then at about 1 am it shuts off and 6 am it comes back on. I think I'm conserving electricity by doing that because I DO NOT wait for the temp to hit 78 before the A/C turns off; the turning off will happen at the set times, regardless of temp.

I think I repeated myself about a billion times there but I'm still not sure if I got my point across?

What a waste of time?

theres still Z listeners? besides the fact that they usually throw in a line of Tiesto, Carl cox, 50 Cent and elephant man right after each other would make people shy away from this station.

TOP 40 stations suck...

another invaluable opinion
