Hi! Wow I saw that movie for the 2nd time, and the first 30-45 minutes of the movie still are so impressive, scary, amazing...by the way did someone understand the whole movie and could explain? Still obscure for me...but yes the first part of the movie is really well done, and so frightening!

hey buddy - Lost Highway is a great movie! had to watch it a few times before i "got it". you have to remember that there is no ABSOLUTE meaning behind this movie - its geneally left up to the viewer to make his/her own mind up. here's my take on it tho:
Fred and Renee have a very cold marriage. Renee is not fulfilled by him and despite all of Fred's efforts, he cannot win the love of his wife. He is seething with jealousy and is suspicious that Renee is having an affair. When his jealousy reaches bursting point he murders his wife in cold blood and possibly the girl's lover.
the movie begins a few moments after the murder has taken place (you can notice red in the background - BLOOD!) the next scene is the start of fred's hallucination. he tries to build himself a world he can hide from reality but it is not long before he realizes he cannot escape the truth (the videotapes being sent)
When this first attempt fails for Fred he creates a more ellaborate world for him to hide in - one in which he assumes a different identity - Pete. in this reality he is actually a good lover - cool and confident with a sexy mistress wanting him. fred wants to possess Renee and it is his longing for this to happen which creates the character of Alice - some1 Fred thinks he can own. at the love scene 2wards the end when she whispers in his ear "You'll never have me" it is actually fred realising he cannot escape reality - his wife never loved him and he murdered her because of it.
i've left out ALOT of info because it is such a complex movie. if you have any specific questions ask away!
(Edit) PS. Patricia Arquette (/Edit)

P.S What is that accapela titled in the love seen. Lost witness - Did I dream? I know it has been remixed alot. The Ratty one is good.

Yeah, I bought it when it came out and watched it 2 times immediately. It took me about 5 times to understand it generally, and those clues don't help me. But it's great.
That seen w/ the Cowboy's funny as hell.

The version you gave seems to be plausible I never understood why the wife was dead on the videotapes, but now I see... like you said not necessarily the truth but plausible for me

another little tidbit is that robert blake is said to be fred's fear. notice how fire has a symbolic importance thruout the movie. fire represents fred's anger. notice the scene where the cabin explodes backwards? the cabin represents fred's mind, the fire being forced into the cabin means fred is not dealing with his anger and low and behold the mystery man walks out of the cabin. the idea being fear is spawned from anger.
god i rock
and yes arquette is smokin in this! love her in most of her movies especially true romance!
