honestly, just pick up a version of Fruity Loops, get some sample packes, learn the program front to back and then move on to something more complex...thats what I did
FL is a great place to start.

If you really wanted to be basic and cheesy, and get the general idea of how to structure tunes/beats then try a ejay program then move onto something like fruity loops.
Wouldent advise ejay, but it will show you how to structure tunes properly and then take it from there using alot more advanced software.

You don't even have to move on from Fruity Loops. Just invest in VSTs when the time comes.

Cheers

yeah FL can do everything + its easy to learn... From the beginning FL was being laughed at because of its silly name (Fruity Loops), which gives it a amateurish feeling... For the next version (6) they really should come up with a whole new name to be taken seriously (by the pro's)

Its very ahrd to choose which stuff to start out with cuz there is soooo much out there toi choose from.

The best advice I can offer is to try out all the stuff that you are curious about for a while, then choose the tools you are comfortable with, and spend a lot of time to master those things.

Lots of people seem to act like there is only FL, vsts and then the expensive stuff like logic and cubase. But there is sooo much more out there that remains largely ignored.

I'd say start off with mastering a song arrangement program, work hard at it until you are really good and if you aren't satisfied then learn a different one. After than I suggest getting aquantied with some sort of sound design stuff.

My choices for these things so far have been renoise andaudiomulch, but I change my mind all the time.
