DVI vs. VGA

Basically, Im interested in what the difference is. Is there a quality or speed difference between the two? Is one overall better? I have both options on my video card, and since Im looking to pick up a new monitor, I was wondering if DVI has any major advatages over vga.

I've heard that DVI apparently translates to no loss in color representation... I.E. whatever the video card sends the monitor, will be represented on the monitor. However, as pointed out above, LCDs do not have the range in colors that CRTs have.

Basically it comes down to what do you use your computer for (as mentioned above). Overall a good comparison.

DVi is digital. Excellent when you have a digital source because it maintains the signal clarity. Nou was close, but the NEC technology has a 16 milisecond refresh rate just like everything else. Only the old school LCDs are the 30 ms. LCDs have richer more vibrant tones, and tend to be easier on the eyes due to no "white light" coming between the pixels. Its basically an emissive technology instead of passive which means the pixels are the source of light themselves.

Although LCD is still semi passive due to a light source behind the liquid, the close proximity and nature of the filter would make it a hybrid leaning towards emissive.

But if the question is DVI vs VGA, youre talking miles of difference in clarity. The shielding and fact that its digital are the two biggies. Digital carries pixel by pixel information instead of analog which is trying to send waveforms so a screen can draw the picture in. Like a TV or rear projection TV. Anything using guns or magnetic cathrode rays to shoot your screen is gonna be lower quality. Digital screens like LCD, DLP, or Plasma are going to be much more suited for the digital world of computers and DVDs due to their individually acting pixels.

yeah that no color thing is the way to transmit video.

1)RCA composite (red white yellow) red and white are left and right channels of sound. All color is bundled together shittily in your yellow channel. Low shielding and mixed information means color and clarity loss

2) S video. Spit video. changes them to Brightness and color. Different paths maintain signals better with more clarity

3) Red Blue Green Component. nuff said. 3 different primary color channels.

4) DVI/HDMI - both the digital video interface but HDMI has audio bundled into it. Rarer form, but its there.

get the LCD with NEC technology and youre friggn golden!
